LAST night more than 2,000 homes across Cleethorpes were plunged into darkness.

The first reports of the power cut were received by Northern Powergrid at 6.29pm, which said the outage was affecting properties across the DN35 and DN32 postcodes.

At just before 7pm, a spokesman for the firm tweeted: “We’re aware of customers off supply in #Cleethorpes, staff are en route to site, updates to follow.”

Among the streets effected were:

At the time of going to press, the spokesman told the Grimsby Telegraph it was not yet confirmed what had caused the power cut, but it was thought to be a “wider area issue” relating to a cable fault.

He added that the first priority was to restore power, but it was not known how long this would take.

He said: “We would like to apologise to our customers for any inconvenience this has caused.

“We are doing all we can to resolve the situation as quickly as possible.”

“by GerrySixties: the supply to your house is 415Vac using one phase and neutral.....down the street it is often the case to supply so many houses on one phase and so many on the other two phases to balance the cable load. Crazylarry......nah not green phase ever! In most areas it will still be red yellow blue......new cables since 2006 brown black grey.........”

“Wider area issue and cable fault. Just tell us, never mind being shady. It could mean Doris the cleaner tripped over a computer lead causing a few substations to be disabled.”

“This was really strange. I was cut off between 6.30pm and 7.45pm. But my street was only partly off - half the street had power while the other half did not. Street lighting was off in only half the street. Most neighbouring streets had power. So where do they get this wide area failure? Looks to me most likely to have been a sub-station failure and I always thought these could be resolved remotely from their distrbution centre. I called the helpline to report the issue only to discover a voice recognition system that was hopeless. And what is the use of an online web page giving info when no one has the power to get online?”

“Power was lost @6.30pm, restored something like a hour and three quarters later. I don't think it could be put down to cable theft, restored too quickly for that. Most likely a sub station has thrown a wobbler. If that's due to someones inteference, I wouldn't be too dismayed to hear they electrocuted themselves.”
