7 million working people will be hit by cuts, says Grimsby MP Austin Mitchell
WE’RE all in this together” rings pretty hollow when we see the Government giving big tax cuts to millionaires while cutting benefits and purging the disabled off them.
Government has just announced benefit cuts to punish the “shirkers”. In fact, they will hit seven million working people and reduce the income of one-earner families on benefit by £534 a year, and of working mums by £180 a year. They’ve also announced that £10 billion more benefit cuts are still to come.
Even more painful is the cruel shakedown of disabled beneficiaries which is causing great misery and distress. A French computer firm, ATOS, has already assessed one million beneficiaries and is doing more, at the rate of around 100,000 a month.
Their assessment is brief and perfunctory, done on a tick-box basis, suitable for computer processing rather than taking real account of medical conditions. This is deliberate.
