FURTHER to the articles on food banks, St James Rotary Club has been assisting Cath and Ken Homewood, of the Grimsby Food Kitchen, and has explored many avenues to see if we can source unused or unsold food.
In some respects it has been successful, but in others I am appalled at the lack of response, not even the courtesy of a reply.

In particular, I was seeking help from the bakeries and trying to obtain their unsold goods.
As you might imagine, the big problem is health and safety (H&S) – I guess businesses are so afraid of anyone being made ill by their products they are unable to let us have it.

Isn’t there something dreadfully wrong when people are hungry and because of H&S they cannot receive the food it is literally thrown away or given for pigswill? Isn’t this just criminal?
However, I must stress with those bakeries that have responded they do want to help, but cannot get over the H&S issue. Can anyone answer this question: “If I go into any bakery just before they close and offer a nominal sum for their unsold goods, and they agree – what is the difference between a token amount of money exchanging hands and my obtaining the goods and being given the same goods for free?”

It is a sad situation if health and safety is preventing food near its “best before” date from being passed on, particularly when taking the difference between “use by” and “best before” dates into consideration.
