Academy plans for St Andrew's College in Cleethorpes
A CONSULTATION is underway to transform the last remaining Cleethorpes school into an academy.
St Andrew’s College has secured sponsorship from the Nottingham Roman Catholic Diocesan Education Service (NRC DES) to fund the joint-church school.
Currently the college – which celebrated a 20 per cent rise of pupils getting A* to C GCSE results – is a trust between the Dioceses of Lincoln and Nottingham.
Principal Louise Wilson said: “Converting to an academy would support our school towards becoming an outstanding academy.”

“twiglets: You are correct in saying that St Andrew's College was opened as a Joint Church school. However, I want to try and reassure you that as a Catholic Sponsored Academy St Andrew's WILL continue to not only welcome children, but will actively encourage familiesfrom any other Christian denomination, faith or no faith background at all, to send their child(ren) to the school as it does now.
Research would also lead you to find that many people from other faiths are happy to send their children to Catholic schools. Nationally, faith schools often out-perform other schools, and for that reason alone non-Catholic parents will send their child to them.
St Andrew's, as a Catholic academy, just like St Mary's Catholic High School was, will not be a Catholic school just for Catholics...but from anyone who wishes to receive their secondary education in a small, caring environment, with a distinctive ethos and where the child will be encouraged to be the best he or she can be, going on to achieve their potential; and not simply be of value if their potential will help the school to top league tables.
How do I know this you might ask? It is because I am a member of the governing body who sets the vision and then ensures the leadership of the school carries this out on a daily basis.
I have no doubt that the change to academy status will not be detrimental to the education of your son, and I would encourage you to speak to Mrs Wilson, who will be able to allay your concerns and who would welcome your daughter as a student in the future.”

“When the two schools were put together parent were assured that it would remain a JOIN! Faith school so to call it a catholic Academy I feel is wrong not all the pupils are of that faith. The letter receive today said children of all believes would be made welcome but how many jewish, muslim or church of England parents will send their children there? It will end up purely catholic which I believe is what they want.so even though my son already goes there my daughter WILL NOT!!!”

“In response to kerrigansian, to my Knowledge St.Andrew's has only had 2 heads, the current one & Peter Cantley. Steve Cook was never "Head" at this College, only Matthew Humberstone!
If only the local authority hadn't moved the process on and cut the planning period by 2 years, maybe this is something that could have been looked into sooner. St.Mary's was never a school just for "Catholics" it was much more than that. I think whatever happens in the future this school/college will stuggle. The Catholic community feels cheated & betrayed by Bishop Malcolm. He couldn't be trusted in the last process, so why should we trust him now!”

“St Andrews is far from c*r*a*p. The current head is doing a great job. St Andrew's has had it's best results ever & last years results were better than both the results at Matthew Humberstone & St Mary's. I also lamented the demise of St Mary's, my kids were very happy there & did very well, but I also have children in St Andrew's who are equally as happy & doing very well. The original amalgamation of the schools was forced by the government. The intake for all schools in the current year 7 is low as the birth rate that year was particularly low. At last we can have a Catholic secondary school again and the Catholic community should be supportive.”

“No matter what they turn with school into it will always be c*r*a*p, maybe actually listening to the students when they have something to say instead of ignoring them the school would be a better place. Joining the two schools was a massive mistake it should have never of been done, its had 3 headteachers since it opened as st andrews and if this one is as useless as Cantley then there will soon be another one. Get Steve Cook back and maybe this will be a better place seen as his the only headteacher that has actually been a good head since 2007. If the teachers actually did the job properly the GCSE grades would be alot higher anyway.”

“I read with outrage to put it mildly about the catholic churches sponsorship of St Andrews College, what a joke. It's a shame they didnt do the same 2 years ago when they had an excellent CATHOLIC school thriving with better results and intake. With St Andrews intake for this year less than 30 and the previous year less than 50. How will making it an academy make it better? Lets face it it should never have happened! I sugest the bishop drinks less red wine, gets his head out of the sand and live in the real world.”
