ACTING chief constable Alec Wood admits he remains in the dark over why top cop Neil Rhodes has been suspended from duty.

The former deputy chief was promoted on a temporary basis last week on the day Police and Crime Commissioner for Lincolnshire Alan Hardwick took the decision to suspend Mr Rhodes.

No reason for the decision has yet been given to the county force's 2,100 staff or its new leader.

Despite "one of the toughest weeks" of his career, the acting chief has vowed to inform his officers of any developments as soon as he is told by Mr Hardwick.

He said: "It has been an unprecedented and very tough time indeed at Lincolnshire Police.

"Breaking the news to the staff about Neil's suspension was very tough, but the response from everyone has been first-class.

"From the frontline officers to the detectives, everyone has responded very well and as far as I am concerned, it is business as usual.

"I have absolutely no idea as to why Neil has been suspended. It is up to the Police and Crime Commissioner to tell me and I am sure he has his reasons for keeping this quiet for now."

Jon Hassall, chairman elect of the Lincolnshire Police Federation, has said officers deserved to know the nature of allegations against Mr Rhodes.

"This secrecy is not ideal, of course, because you are always wondering why Neil has been suspended," added Mr Wood.

"But that is what happens. All I can say is that Neil was a close colleague of mine and we got on very well.

"My focus now has to be to lead Lincolnshire Police to the best of my ability – whether that is for several weeks, months or more.

"I agree the officers and, indeed, the public should know the reasons behind Neil's suspension but I just ask them to be patient and it will all be revealed soon I am sure."
