BAFTA nominee Jim Broadbent starred in a film about life on a farm in Lincolnshire even before his official silver screen career began.

A film reel has been found in which the Oscar winner, originally from near Market Rasen, assumes the role of a worker at Nocton Estate, south of Lincoln.

Named The Greenhouse, the 18-minute black and white production was made in February 1976.

According to the Internet Movie Database (IMDb), Broadbent's first movie appearance was in The Shout two years later.

But the documentary suggests his first performance may have slipped under the radar.

The star, who has a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his role as Dennis Thatcher in the film The Iron Lady, is seen doing jobs on the farm and speaking to other workers while on his lunch break.

Broadbent, was then aged 26 with dark curly hair and a goatee beard. Early in the footage, he speaks about the county's landscape in a voiceover recording.

He said: "The land is good around here, very easy to farm with it being so flat. Good farming land Lincolnshire."

The film was made by Broadbent's friend Alan Coddington as part of his studies at the National Film School.

It features shots across the fens towards Lincoln Cathedral, potato planting in the fields and glimpses of Dunston, south of Lincoln.

Mr Coddington discovered the original 16 millimetre footage in his loft around six years ago.

He then decided to make a DVD copy as he had no way of watching it in the old format.

One other copy was made for the only surviving worker featured in the film, former tractor driver William Franklin.

However Mr Franklin, 90, of Dunston, was unaware of who Broadbent was until the film was seen recently by his son.

Graham Franklin, 58, a nightclub owner from Cleethorpes, said: "When I looked at the film I thought I recognised his face and then I looked at the case and I recognised the name.

"It was a bit of a 'wow factor' that my dad had been in this film with someone who has gone on to be so famous."

Broadbent is looking forward to tomorrow's Orange British Academy Film Awards ceremony at London's Royal Opera House.

He said: "It was a bit of a surprise to be nominated again but the BAFTAs are always a good excuse for a party."

His rivals for Best Supporting Actor are Christopher Plummer for Beginners, Jonah Hill for Moneyball, Kenneth Branagh for My Week with Marilyn and Philip Seymour Hoffman for The Ides of March.

Lincolnshire's veteran actor last won a BAFTA in 2002 for Moulin Rouge - the year he also walked away with an Oscar and a Golden Globe.

The Iron Lady, about the life of Grantham-born Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, has been nominated for two awards - Original Screenplay and Makeup and Hair.

Leading lady Meryl Streep, straight from her success in the Golden Globes, goes up against Michelle Williams in the Best Actress category for their roles in The Iron Lady and My Week With Marilyn respectively.

Dominating this year's BAFTA nominations are The Artist and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, with 23 nominations between them.

Leading the way for the Brits alongside Broadbent is actor Gary Oldman, who is nominated under the Best Actor award for his role in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Tilda Swinton has also received a nomination under the Best Actress category for her role in We Need To Talk About Kevin.

“Hollywood actress Meryl Streep paid tribute to Market Rasen area actor Jim Broadbent - and claimed her ancestors also came from Lincolnshire - when she accepted a gong for Best Actress at last night's BAFTA's.

Broadbent plays Denis Thatcher in the film The Irony Lady, in which Streep is Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

Streep said: "I want to thank the soulful Jim Broadbent, the divinely gifted Olivia Colman.

"I want to say that half of me is Streep, but the other half is Wilkinson from Lincolnshire, so I come by this role honestly."

Born in New Jersey, her mother is Mary Wilkinson and her eighth great-grandfather, Lawrence Wilkinson, was one of the first Europeans to settle in Rhode Island.

Broadbent was also nominated for Best Supporting Actor but lost out to Christopher Plummer, now 82, for his moving portrayal of a late developing gay man in Beginners.

He said, however, that it had been lots of fun playing opposite Streep.

As hard as it is to imagine the queen of Hollywood as a Lincolnshire Yellow Belly, Americans love discovering their ancestors. So who knows, maybe one day she will take some time out to meet up with Jim and explore the county.”

“Actress Meryl Streep has landed an Oscar nomination for her performance as Grantham-born PM Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady.

The film, which has already earned the star a Golden Globe, also features Lincolnshire-born actor Jim Broadbent, from Wickenby near Market Rasen, as Denis Thatcher, who has missed out on a nomination on this occasion. He has, however, received a BAFTA nomination for best supporting actor.

Brits Gary Oldman - for his role in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy - Kenneth Branagh and Janet McTeer are also in the running for Academy Awards. Oldman, 53, is up for best actor for his role as George Smiley in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Branagh, 51, is in the running for best supporting actor for his performance as Sir Laurence Olivier in Marilyn Monroe biopic My Week With Marilyn.

The Artist is, as expected, is up for Best Picture, along with War Horse, Hugo, The Descendants, The Help, Midnight in Paris, Moneyball, The Tree of Life and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.

The 84th Academy Awards take place on Sunday, February 26, at the Kodak Theatre, Hollywood. They will be presented by actor and comedian Billy Crystal.”
