Ancient remains to be interred
THE ancient remains of nine adults and 14 children will be buried in Holton-le-Clay tomorrow.
The Anglo-Saxon adults and children have been stored in Welholme Galleries, Grimsby, since they were excavated from St Peter's Church at Holton-le-Clay during the 1970s and early 1990s.
Believed to be Anglo-Saxon and Christian in origin, because they were buried within the churchyard on consecrated ground, the remains were put into storage.
However, they have never been actively used for any research purposes and have no scientific value, so a decision has been taken to re-inter their bones close to their original resting place at the church.
In keeping with their Christian origins, the bones will be given a Christian ceremony as they are re-interred.
Everybody is welcome to attend the service, which will take place at 3pm tomorrow.
Kettles Funeral Parlour has donated a coffin for the ceremony.

“I agree with Edward's comment about them possibly not being Christian, however, if they are from the late Saxon period (circa 6th to 8th centuries), it is most likely that they were buried originally with some modicum of 'Christian' burial rites. There are many disagreements with what Christianity entailed from the Saxon period, but it is likely that the ceremony is completely different!! Kudos to the decision for re-burial though.”

“i find it disturbing that someones remains have been excavated in the first place. surly if you find old bones in a grave yard its obviously some ones grave [why would anyone think its ok to move them] were not even safe when we are dead and buried.”

“Many old churches were built on former Pagan holy ground. They may, therefore, have not been Christians and should not be given a Christian burial. Has anyone tried contacting their descendants for permission?”
