A CLEETHORPES bar has successfully applied to have it licensing hours extended – despite residents complaints.

The Studio, Market Street, can now serve alcohol until 4am, providing it adheres to two conditions.

A meeting of North East Lincolnshire Council's licensing sub-committee heard objections to the application from residents of Mill Place, which runs past the side of the popular venue. These included: alleged drug taking in the rear yard of the property; increase in vandalism to properties and cars since The Studio opened in November, last year; allegations of people leaving the venue and having sex in a nearby alleyway.

However, the committee – made up of councillors Dave Boylen, Peter Barker and chairman Stewart Swinburn – ruled that because of a lack of evidence, they couldn't reject the application.

“Too many pubs and clubs are having there licence's hours increased, no wonder the police cannot cope with the 2am closures let along the 4amER's, too many late licences are given to anyone in cleethorpes and its about time its CLAMPED down on. its a good job the old woolworths didn't become another pub as the police cannot cope with the small amount of pubs at the moment.”

“I note with interest that the three councillors who made the decision to extend the opening hours are not from Cleethorpes and I bet they did not even bother to come and have a look for themselves. Where were the local ward councillors?”

“I don`t think the owner gives a damm about the people who live round there . He is a millionaire so he will have a nice big house just outside of Grimsby. I feel sorry for the people who live at the back of the pub in Mill Place, with the noise that comes from the air con units/chillers.”

“This kind of thing will happen in or around any club or bar! It's not nice at all for the residents and I really sympathise with them, but how can the "committee" claim their is lack of evidence if residents are coming forward, isn't that evidence enough??? Doesn't the bar have CCTV?”

“Here's an idea. Before granting extensions to licensing hours, the people making the decision actually visit the establishment to judge for themselves whether it's appropriate. How on earth can people with no idea of the impact it will have on the local area make these decisions?”
