A BEAUTY business is reaping the benefits of employing a young apprentice through the North East Lincolnshire Council's Chan- geworks programme.

As part of national apprenticeship week, The Beauty Barn, in Bargate, Grimsby, has taken advantage of a £2,500 grant which subsidises the apprentice's pay.

Apprenticeships are a great way for young people to start their career. They offer individuals an opportunity to learn valuable skills, gain qualifications and earn a wage at the same time.

Employers can benefit by recruiting an enthusiastic individual who is willing to learn and meet future business requirements by training and developing a skilled workforce for the future.

Hannah Johnson, 18, said: "I decided university wasn't for me, so I left Franklin College and decided to look for full-time work.

"Then, my friend told me about apprenticeships because she had recently been successful as an apprentice in business admin.

"I loved the idea of getting an apprenticeship – as you can work and earn money – but also learn further to complete your NVQ level 2 in business admin. This is great as it means you are gaining more qualifications and earning at the same time.

"I am really pleased I applied for an apprenticeship and I would definitely recommend it to anyone.

"Apprenticeships give that extra experience and qualification that you need for jobs in the future.

"It has been going really well so far and I'm really enjoying working."

Beauty Barn owner Catherine Wheatley said: "As a new business opening last October, the apprenticeship grant scheme has been very beneficial.

"It has enabled me to take on a new employee, at an affordable cost, which I otherwise would not have been able to do.

"In return, I have been able to offer a young person an employment opportunity allowing them to attend courses, gaining qualifications and valuable experience in the workplace.

"For me, this is a win, win situation and I am extremely pleased to be part of this great opportunity."

The scheme is on offer to small to medium-sized businesses, for unemployed 16 to 18-year-olds.
