THE Junior Open at Kenwick Park Golf Club saw another incredible round of 69 by Ashton Turner on his home course, to win the Smith Trophy for the best gross round.

Chris Cooper came second with a score of 77, two shots ahead of third-placed Josh Illsley with 79.

In the nett competition, 12-year-old Billy Wright from Kenwick shot a great 78-18=60 to win the nett prize and reduce his handicap to 15.

Wright's aim is to reduce his handicap to 13 by the time he reaches his 13th birthday this summer. The runner-up was Sean Pearson (11) with 71 on countback from George Petrie (27).

A perfect day for golf saw 48 members of the senior section take on the challenge of a Stableford competition for the John King Salver from the formidable white tees.

Mike Walker (10) was in the first group of the day and a steady, solid performance, with several good par putts, put him leader in the clubhouse with an excellent score of 38 points.

This lead proved to be unassailable as his nearest rivals scored 34 points. Roger Goldsmith (13) took the runner-up spot on countback from Mel Young (27).

Meanwhile, at Grimsby Golf Club, longstanding member Doug Bashforth made it three in a row by taking the top spot in the qualifying stages of the prestigious Gilbey Cup.

Bashforth continued his good form of leading his division in the May medal with a resounding win with playing partner, and chairman of the competition committee, Rick Benefer in the Bloomer Cup foursomes competition.

The Gilbey Cup final was played over the fast-running course between Gary Hawkins (11) and last year's winner Tom Willson (9). The first 18 holes were keenly contested with Willson taking the early lead before lunch.

Both players came out in the afternoon trading birdies and pars with Hawkins making a slight comeback, but the steady play and consistent driving ensured that Willson became the first player in the club's history to successfully defend the title, winning on the 16th hole.

Elsewhere, Sue Peacock held her Vice-Captain's Day at Immingham Golf Club. The competition was won by Alex Smith with 37 points, beating Chris Vardy on countback. Third was Dawn Simpson on 36.

Lady captain Brenda Connaughton is having a storming season. In the May Saturday Medal, Brenda had an excellent nett 65, reducing her handicap to 13.

Gill Topliss won the McMillan Spoon with 38 points, with Sue Peacock second on 37 and Dawn Simpson third with 36.

Young Alex Smith was victorious once again in the Hindley Trophy, managing to reduce her single handicap down even further. She shot a nett 72, leaving June Powell in second on countback and once again, ever the bridesmaid, was Dawn Simpson in third with 75.
