THE family of Gavin Rogers, who remains in a critical condition following an assault in Cleethorpes, say he tried to avoid trouble by refusing to visit boozy nightspots.

As reported, Gavin, 25, suffered serious injuries to his head and spine following a prolonged attack in the car park behind the popular resort nightclub Flares in Alexandra Road.

He is currently being treated in the intensive care unit at Hull Royal Infirmary, where doctors will today decide whether to attempt to wake him.

Anxiously awaiting news of his condition is his brother Ian, 40, who claimed this was not the first time Gavin had been attacked on a night out – and that he tried to steer clear of weekend drinking holes to avoid getting into trouble.

He said: "He is still in bed in a critical condition and we are waiting for the results of the scans. The doctors will decide whether or not to wake him up.

"My brother was out celebrating a stag do with some friends when he was attacked. He never really went out drinking in the town and he was always careful to avoid trouble.

"An iron bar was put over his head on Freeman Street a few years back and now this has happened."

Gavin, who works as a contractor in factories along the South Bank, underwent scans of his head injuries at Hull Royal Infirmary yesterday and his friends and family are now praying for the all-clear.

Four men aged 24, 25, 39 and 44 have been arrested in connection with the incident and bailed pending further investigations.

Det Insp Wendy North said: "This was a serious incident which happened outside Flares nightclub near the smoking area, so there are potentially a lot of witnesses who are yet to come forward.

A spokesman for Flares said: "This was a particularly serious incident and all of the team are deeply horrified at what took place at the weekend.

"Our thoughts are with the gentleman who has been injured."
