Austin Mitchell brands Labour's plan to build affordable housing as 'sheer waste'
GRIMSBY MP Austin Mitchell has dismissed his own party’s plans to build 100,000 affordable houses as “sheer waste”.
His comments were made during a speech by Shadow Chancellor Ed Balls, who called for the new homes and a two-year stamp duty holiday for first-time buyers.
Mr Balls said the £3.4 billion cost should come from the 4G mobile spectrum sale, stressing the need for “urgent” action on economic growth.
But in a tweet during the speech, Mr Mitchell said putting the 4G windfall into affordable homes “which never are” would be “sheer waste”, adding that “public housing for rent” was the real priority.

“He should have gone further!
Social houseing should be just that, it should be properly designed blocks of flats / appartments owned by the council / government and you should be put in these new very modest places, for free, if you want social housing. .
There should be interim help for people who circumstances have changed and need assistance whilst they look for a new job and adjust, but only for a limited time, say 12 - 18 months, after that you would need to move into social housing.
Outside of that there should be no help, no money for rent with private landlords, who make money at the tax payers expense.”
