Petition leads to council pledge to review leisure services
A PETITION calling for Scartho Baths to be saved was handed over to council chiefs today.
Campaigners aiming to keep the public baths on Scartho Road open presented a 5,500-signature petition on the steps of Grimsby town hall as councillors came under growing pressure to do a U-turn on the planned closure of the 50-year-old baths.
Among the campaigners was Paralympic swimmer Marc Woods and veteran channel swimmer Brenda Fisher, 85, who were joined by MPs, swimmers and residents.
A spokesman for North East Lincolnshire Council has agreed to set up a select committee to look at the costs of leisure services in future.

“"A spokesman for North East Lincolnshire Council has agreed to set up a select committee to look at the costs of leisure services in future."
This campaign must be having an effect - normally messrs Shaw, Burnett et al are only to eager to give us the benefit of their great wisdom when they make their statements in the press, but we now have an anonymous (no doubt Labour) spokesman for the council! I
Remember that any select committee will be politically balanced, and will have a majority of Labour members. Bearing in mind that members of the Labour party always vote the way they are told I predict that this select committee will just go through the motions before deciding to approve this closure an it will just be another expensive waste of time!
I see from the photograph that Alan Barratt is a fine figure of a man - I guess I'll have to carry on using my imagination for hmm_mmm!”

In other words, they've agreed to carry out a meaningless PR stunt they can claim expenses for without directly addressing the matter of the future of Scartho Baths.”

“When the council have been made to see sense over Scarthobaths we should start to put pressure on them to do what Labour said we should a couple of years ago, and use the money that comes back from the Icelandic banks to pay for a new ice rink!
There were 32,000 names on the petition to save the ice rink, and Mick Burnett and Labour supported this when they were in opposition, but it is a different story now isn't it!”

“Why this sudden need to review the Scartho baths descion NELC ?
Too many freedom of information requests or a genuine want to listen to the people that elected our councillors ?
Interesting times ahead now what's that word Cllr Shaw .....”

“7Cs of rhye you are right. A select committee would consist of Labour Councillors the very people who decided the closure behind closed Cabinet doors and without consultation with the general public.
Would this be transparent and open? I think not!
Councillors we know you read these posts, make the Committee open or at least include all politcal party's.
I would suggest an independent chair as well.”

“The Council have made one giant error with this decision and I suspect it will come back to haunt them frequently.....”

Ha-ha-ha-haaaaa, my sides are splitting. Who do they think they are? Bring on 6 months or so of squabbling cabinet meetings complete with buffets.
For god sake! Proper parliamentary select committees are a complete laughing stock, imagine what a North East Lincolnshire council select committee will be like.”
