AVERAGE speed cameras are to be installed along the 30mph stretch of Peaks Parkway in an attempt to cut the number of accidents on there.

They will be placed between Frederick Ward Way and Peaks Tunnel Bridge, where the speed limit becomes 50mph, and will measure a driver’s speed at certain points along there and calculate average speed, rather than at just one point, where motorists could just slow down for the camera to avoid a fine.

Road safety bosses are hoping it will make a difference to accident figures on there, which have continued to rise despite year-on-year reductions elsewhere in the borough.

Peter Wheatley, North East Lincolnshire Council’s portfolio holder for the environment, said: “The cameras are being installed as a safety measure. If they don’t record anyone breaking the speed limit on the road, that will be great. It’s not about catching people, it’s about reducing crashes and giving drivers a safer journey.”

Barry Gardner, Humberside Police casualty reduction officer said initially, it was just to gather information about speed, and it would not immediately be enforced, but was likely to be in the future.

“This is purely and simply a money grabber under the usual guise of road safety.
I defy the council to publish details of every serious accident caused by speed, on the stretch going out of town behind the YMCA , in the last two years.
I'd wager most accidents are rear end shunts at the totally inadequate, out of sync traffic lights.
Or probably by pig headed drivers refusing to allow others in as the road narrows on the 30mph stretch between Weelsby Rd and B+Q.
Its nothing more than yet another way of getting cash off the already fleeced motorist.”

“I seem to recollect that when the parkway was proposed we were told that there would be a system that turned lights red to cars approaching at speeds higher than the limit. In other words a speed limiting measure. It seems to me that this 'system' has not happened because you can regularly be overtaken by cars doing much higher than the limits and they do not get stopped.

However, there must be a similar system installed at most other traffic lights in the borough because, as an example you can travel along Clp/Gy Road at 3 in the morning, at the speed limit, and get stopped at every set of traffic lights even when there isn't another vehicle in any other direction moving within half a mile!

So instead of spending a fortune on cameras just alter the detection and sequencing of the traffic lights. The above proves it can be done and this would be minimal expense. Perhaps not much of a backhander in it for anyone though and certainly of course no income generation.”

“Controlling the loonies who think they have a divine right to exceed the speed limit is a must. It's great news for those decent law abiding drivers who use Peaks Parkway and the same commonsense approach should be applied to the A180 and Scartho Road.

Time and time again we can observe local loonies accelerate hard to close a gap ahead of them and then have to break so as not to collide with a car travelling at the speed limit in front of them and then start their tailgating.

Controlling speed on the Laceby Bypass has been a magnificent safety success and the ohsoimportant law breaking speeding loonies are going to be made to FOOT OFF even more.

We want more speed cameras to make sure that the ohsoimportants FOOT OFF.

Ohsoimportants SPEED KILLS so SAVE LIVES and FOOT OFF.”

“Heres a radical idea ,sequence the lights correctly so that if you travel at 30mph they will all be green , speeding motorists will quickly learn there is nothing to gain by exceeding 30mph”

    “grimrich,

If you've never been higher than 25mph, then we don't need speed cameras, you're a driving disaster.

Get a bike, or walk ( but not on the Peakes Parkway.) and let others drive at the National Speed Limit!”

“This is nothing but income generation and it cannot be denied!!!!

Peaks Parkway is safe and capable of all the limits along it's length being INCREASED by 10mph let alone slowing traffic down further.

In all it's time I don't recollect an incident caused by speed. Those accidents that have happened (just like Laceby Bypass) have been caused by morons under the influence of drink and/or drugs or driving recklessly, perhaps within the speed limit, but jumping Amber and red traffic lights.

The authorities in this town will not be happy until we are all driving along following a man carrying a red flag,

As it stands Peaks Parkway is just a car ark at both ends making it seem like a road to nowhere, the authoritarians obviously want it all to be a car park.

I wouldn't object to cameras if the limit for the type of road was sensible - this is not.

It would make far more sense to increase speed limits but install traffic light cameras to catch the jumpers. If traffic is slowed further by speed cameras there will be even more inclination to jump red lights to try to get anywhere in reasonable time.

Reducing speed on the parkway, which cameras will do since most people slow to well below the limit because they take no notice of what the limit actually is, makes the whole project of providing the parkway in the first place unjustified and traffic may still as well use Louth Road/Scartho Road instead.”
