TROUBLE flared in Cleethorpes as violence erupted among fans after Grimsby Town’s pre-season friendly match with Sheffield Wednesday.

Four Mariners fans and two Owls fans have been arrested following clashes with police on the sea front – in what have been described by officers as “a few very minor skirmishes”.

It has also been confirmed that six windows have been smashed at the Fisherman’s Arms on Sea View Street.

Police speak to a man on the sea front in connection with the trouble.

Humberside Police Inspector Scott Snowden said there had been tension between the two sets of supporters following the final whistle.

See Monday’s Grimsby Telegraph for more on the trouble.

“The riots in Lincoln you refer to.. can only be the New Years Eve riots of 1988 (when there was unrest in lots of Cities over the UK..), or the prison riot of a few years ago.. (and that was hardly anything to do with locals or the City..). The big difference between Lincoln and Grimsby.. (I spend a lot of time in both places), is that Lincoln is a forward thinking City, has had lots of growth and investment.. (University, numerous retail developments, bars, restaurants, cultural development, entertainment venues, Engine Shed etc etc.. you can go on..), which has turned it into a prosperous bustling cosmopolitan City, where different cultures now work, play, relax and live happily side by side. What has Grimsby had over the last 20 years ? Nothing... Lincoln has grown and boomed.. Grimsby has and continues to decline.. Unfortunatley aspects like football violence are more an outlet valve of society, where pent up social frustration in a rundown area will blow from time to time... hence Burton and now this latest installment.. and it will certainly not be the last.
I'm afraid I don't know what the answer is... there isn't an easy one, but until ecomomic and social changes take place, (and with all the investment cuts proposed, it doesn't look likely to improve for some time), the gap between the likes of Lincoln and Grimsby will continue to grow. The planners and elders in authority for development of the City of Lincoln, rightly take a pat on the back from the plaudits, however the planners in charge of growth and development in Grimsby, need to take a long hard look in the mirror. Lincoln made hay while the sun shone.. what did Grimsby do..
All football does in general is reflect urban society, (there are of course exceptions), but not in this case.. Grimsby now none league, while Lincoln growing as a club and one of the fancied teams for promotion this season. I hope Grimsby can buck the trend and wish both the Mariners and Imps good luck for next season.. Lets hope we just read about on field antics.”

“Believe it or not it is possible to go into a pub or bar, and not drink alcohol.

Lets apply your 'cultural' litmus paper to Tywyn and Aberdyfi. One cinema, no museums, and no theatres. Grimsby does have a cinema, auditorium, and a museum.

Yes, we do lack an histroical area like Lincoln, but thats because this is mainly and industrial town, and anything remotely historical was levelled in the 1960's and concreted over. And yes, for a town this size we don't have as many cultural centres as I'd like, but thats not so much down to the people, as the lack of funds available. This is one of the poorest areas for government funding, and very few museums etc; actually turn a true profit. You only have to look at the reaction to the governments proposals to cut funding to that sector, and the panic its caused to those working in it.

But none of that really matters, I live in Grimsby, and you've already decided that I'm either on drink or drugs, and terminally thick.”

You say, "For a start I'm teetotal." Well so am I, and so I can't make fair comment on the statement you made in the following paragraph and I can't see how you can.

"Go for a drink on a Saturday in Lincoln and your as likely to see trouble there as you are in Grimsby."

But, if you walk around the outside of Lincoln Cathedral you're not likely to see groups of winos causing a nuisance of themselves as they do in St. James Square or carol concerts ruined in the cathedral, but they have been in St. James by the brainless.

Museums, art galleries, theatres where are they, what is there of cultural interest to anyone? There is nothing, and so Grimsby is a cultural backwater and it's small wonder the inhabitants are proud to be thick when there is nothing and no one to have inspired them. Living in such a cultural void is the reason why so many numb what few brain cells they have, with any mind altering substance they can get their hands on. If this island could be transformed into a human body, which part do you think Grimsby would be turned into? No I won't tell you, I'll leave it up to your imagination but hint, it's definitely not the brain.”

“For a start I'm teetotal, so I hardly see the bottom of a pint glass, let alone through it.

"it seems to me that the entitlement of the young is to become loud, course, disrespectful and boorish before entering the adult world"

So this is just a problem in Grimsby? I've lived outside Grimsby enough to know that is not the case, and that the chav hoodie culture is alive and well.

And yes, there where riots in Lincoln. Don't ask me for dates, but it as a few years ago, and I was working in Lincoln at the time.”

    “Scrum, Gy.

You just seem to comment on things seen through the bottom of a glass. There's more to life than that and as sure as sure can be it certainly isn't in Grimsby and that's why it is such a culturally deprived backwater, with a high proportion of low achieving people who are proud to be thick. It's reported as being the sixth worst place to live in the country and it seems to me that the entitlement of the young is to become loud, course, disrespectful and boorish before entering the adult world. Just walk around, ride around, look, listen and read the ET to realize what a horror story the place shows itself to be. Those wishing to improve Grimsby have a tough task and believe me I wish them luck.”
