Baker fulfils her 'life's dream' after opening cake shop at Waltham Windmill
THIS baker says she has realised her "life's dream" after opening her very own cake shop at Waltham Windmill.
Mum-of-three Barbara Stewart, 56, has opened Cakes By Barbara and has pledged to "make people happy" with her lovingly-crafted range of homemade cupcakes, pastries and celebration cakes.
She has moved to the new unit on the site of Waltham's famous landmark, having previously worked out of a specially constructed "hobby room" at the back of her bungalow, on nearby Westfield Road.
Barbara, a former staff nurse on the dialysis unit at the Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital, said: "When I left work, I needed to take it easy because of illness.
"But then my husband came out of work and then we started to struggle.
"I had always made cakes for my children when they were younger, and so I put an advert in the local Post Office to say that I was available to make cakes.
"A lady asked me to make one, she really liked it and told her friends about me and it has just grown from there really. So we had a specifically-made hobby room built at the back of our house so I could make cakes from home and built the business up from there.
"I have always wanted my own little shop near to the windmill, so it is a dream come true to finally be open."
Now that she is settled into her new surroundings, Barbara, who is an accredited demonstrator for the British Sugar Craft Guild, is planning to start cake decoration lessons for pupils of all abilities.
As well as this, she is also offering a free consultation service for couples who want to design a dream wedding cake for their big day.
She said: "Now we are up and running, I really want to let people know that I am here.
"I'm looking forward to getting started and building up a regular customer base.
"When people come to buy your produce, go away and come back for more then it is fantastic.
"I just want to make people happy with my cakes and pastries – that is what it is all about.
"As well as the bakery side of the business, I am also starting some cake decoration and sugar flower-making classes at the shop in September.
"It is all very exciting and I am really looking forward to the future."
