FOLLOWING all the flak that has been thrown at council leader Chris Shaw, pictured – over Scartho Baths, the parking permits, the flower beds, you name it – he must have thought that his latest announcement would at least chime with public opinion.

But while some have welcomed his radical proposal to scrap all 650 MPs and replace them in the House of Commons with himself and his fellow council leaders, others are not so sure.

“The only thing I can think of that would be worse than a chamber full of MPs would a chamber full of Chris Shaws!” someone posted on the Grimsby Telegraph’s website.

“In my opinion, £1.5 billion per annum (the amount the council leader thinks his grand plan would save) is a small price to pay in order to prevent people like Councillor Shaw running the country,” wrote another.

“God help us!” was Lib Dem group leader Andrew De Freitas’s succinct reaction.

But I don’t think they need to panic just yet.

As Mr Shaw himself conceded, the turkeys are unlikely to vote for Christmas.

“It's all a re-hash of previous. The councillor is not best liked, give him a bit more time to tighten that noose.”

“Some people, myself included, would like to see a return to direct responsibility so lacking in life today. Many would prefer borstals, the stocks, the birch, even the gallows (perhaps a guillotine for our European neighbours) so that evidence of retribution is there for all to see, especially among politicans. National politicians have a lot to answer for but local politicians are just spiteful. They squabble like children, are totally divorced from the truth and generally deserve nothing but contempt. They are often seduced by promises and nice pictures from manipulative people including some of their own overpaid officers. They refuse to face the reality that this area is a run-down backwater that will never improve unless a genuine long term plan is in place. It is easy to believe that local people "don't know what they want" but that is not true all of the time. In Grimsby mad million pound ideas are muted about a derelict ice factory (it made ICE for heavens sake !) whilst less than a quarter of a mile away is a shopping area that needs some serious bulldozing and redevelopment. In Cleethorpes there is a real shortage of facilities that cater for our quirky English weather, the sites are there but what is needed is encouragement for developers.
Until we have an injection of money and some realistic ideas for progress the area will only degenerate further.”

“Well done Simon. What a task it must have been to take someone else's story, then nabbed the comments from that story and then presented it as your own opinion piece.

    Bravo.

Another reason why sales of the paper are down again.”
