But little did they know they were coaching a youngster who would pull on the England shirt at three different levels, twice lift the European Cup and play for and against some of the biggest names in football.
The forward made more than 60 appearances for the Mariners after arriving at Blundell Park on a free transfer in July 1989.
He was Town's Player of the Year in his first season, and went on to score 11 goals for the club.
Supporting Birtles is Bernard Bale, pictured, whose writing career took him to the 1966 World Cup – where he got to hold the Jules Rimet trophy – as well as European finals and countless other games at all levels.
Bale's football books have been top-sellers and his experiences of spending time with legends of the sport ranging from Bobby Moore to Eric Cantona are worth hearing about.
He will also talk about the time two teams lined up for a national anthem that never was, which soccer legend used to steal toffee apples, and present many other football and sports anecdotes.
Tickets, which are strictly limited and sure to sell fast, are £20, which also includes a pie and pea supper.
They are available by contacting Brigg Town's commercial manager Matt Jones on 07814 068996.
