TRADITIONAL Boxing Day Hunt meetings went ahead despite icy conditions – but without a horse in sight.

For the first time in 25 years, riders turned up to both the Brocklesby and South Wold meets on two legs, fearing the icy conditions would be too treacherous for their mounts to join them

But some Brocklesby Hunt members got into top gear on quad bikes – with huntsman John Goode and whipper-in Will Hampson tearing across the fields to greet their spectators, accompanied by 23-and-a-half couples of hounds.

Joint master of hounds, George Sanderson said: "This is huge part of all these people's Christmas tradition. It is obviously not quite the same without the horses but we put this on for the people who support it."

At South Wold Hunt Boxing Day Meet at Louth Cattle Market hundreds gathered to see the few hounds led by Hunt master Nick Ashcroft.

Leading the Boxing Day Meet in its 153rd year, Mr Ashcroft said: "There are no horses today, but we wanted to keep the tradition going.

"It is too dangerous. You can't go riding in this. It is not safe for the horses and not safe for the people."

“It is a pity that when showing compassion for the safety of their horses these cruel people are clearly unable to show a similar sense of animal welfare for foxes. When hunting with dogs was banned these pro hunting 'hoorah henry' types claimed that we would be over run with foxes. Well, it hasnt happened and we are certainly not overun in fact, there seems to be less foxes about these days.Hunting foxes has long been a barbaric bloodsport and is no better than badger baiting or hare coursing. Apart from that dressing in hunting pinks makes these people look utterly riduculous. Hunting is not a tradition at any time of the year, it is an excuse for certain types to excercise a barbaric blood lust...”

“Loathesome is correct. To call a pastime time such as this 'sport' and claim several reasons to justify it, makes me so sad. Animals, whatever your view of them, should not be allowed to be used in anything that could end in their death in the name of sport. What right do we have? And vermin? They are all part of the ecosystem, just as rats are, they were here before us and hunting them wouldnt solve the 'problem' of urban foxes anyway.
Its wrong, it always was and it always will be. Badger bating is against the law and downright cruel, as is dog fighting, yet people argue the toss to be able to foxhunt. I dont understand the difference. We dont own this planet or the creatutes on it, and as a race, spend millions trying to conserve species that will soon become extinct, and impact on our planet and subsequent survival, and then fight to be able to kill others for 'sport'. I'll never work it out.”

“Loathesome pastime. The unspeakable in pursuit of the inedible.

Hey! I know! Let's have pay-per-view asylum seeking! Give 'em 2 hours head start and see if they can stay ahead of the posh folks for the rest of the day. If they can, put them in the GB running team.”

“The sooner fox hunting is brought back the better. The hunt can come into my garden anytime and get the filthy, smelly, disgusting creatures out. And take all those stupid people who thnk it's lovely to feed the vermin with them!”

“so its brm brm in 4th rather that ge ge at the gallop

animal baiting and a spot of crucifiction over the festive season apparently is good for remembering what the countryside is for what ho,

noise polluttion, animal cruelty and snobbery all go unnoticed in the villages it seems”

    “Update:
Unfortunately I didn't enjoy the little bit of horse steak I had, it was far to well done for my liking.
I have thrown it in the back garden for the foxes to eat!”

“If the predator from the 80's movie suddenly started ripping the huntsmen's throats out in the woods or indeed removing their spinal columns as trophies there would be a great panic and subsequent hullabaloo. For them to really experience the thrill of the hunt they should be coated in zebra blood and released into an area populated by lions. See how enjoyable it is then. Oh, and calling an animal a pest after you have built right into their natural habitat and moved in on their territory is retarded.”
