Businesses in the south bank resort are reporting large increases in the numbers of visitors from Hull and the East Riding since the toll was reduced to £1.50 this year.

The bridge initiative means a toll receipt can be refunded, on the day of issue, at a number of attractions and businesses in Cleethorpes.

Melanie Wood, the chair of Tourism North East Lincolnshire, which runs the scheme, said: "I know my business, Pleasure Island Family Theme Park, has seen a 12 per cent rise in visitors from Hull and East Riding postcodes, year on year.

"We're attributing this to the welcome reduction in the tolls.

"Visitors being able to use their receipt as cash on the day of purchase has also contributed."

The receipts must be dated and can only be refunded on the day of their purchase.
