World Cup fans show support for England by decorating houses, cars and gardens
HERE we go again, it’s England versus Germany – and the whole country is praying that it doesn’t go to penalties!
After clawing their way out of their group as runners-up, England will now face their old enemy in the first knockout stage of the World Cup.

In the run-up to the crunch clash, people around Grimsby and Cleethorpes have been continuing their show of support for Fabio Capello’s men by decorating their houses, cars and gardens in the colours of St George.
But despite the old animosity, there is also a local soft spot for our German cousins.
As reported, our area has strong links with
England’s next opponents as both Grimsby and Cleethorpes are twinned with towns in Germany – Bremerhaven and Konigswinter.
Magaret Solomon, former Mayor of North East Lincolnshire and now secretary of the North East Lincolnshire Community Twinning Association, says that our towns are lucky to be twinned with such “wonderful places”.
The New Waltham resident said: “As secretary of the association, it is my job to organise the annual trips to Bremerhaven and Konigswinter and, I must say, they are absolutely wonderful places.
“Bremerhaven is just fantastic – it was bombed extensively during the war and the way that they have rebuilt it is amazing.
“Like Grimsby, Bremerhaven is very proud of its links to the fishing industry and they have redeveloped their docks superbly.
“I also love Konigswinter – I’ve been going there since 1984 and the people are very friendly.
“It was chosen as a twin to Cleethorpes because it has a similar population and it is also very close to the water – Konigswinter also shares Cleethorpes’ love for donkeys!
“I think it is fantastic that our two towns are twinned with such brilliant places – after visiting them so often they are like homes from home.
“I like Germany very much, through my travels with the association I have developed a fondness from the country and the people but I will definitely be cheering on England tomorrow!”
Pick up your copy of Saturday's Grimsby Telegraph for a full list of the venues that will be showing the game as well as some fun facts about Germany and some traditional recipes from the nation of our opponents.
For those of you that will be doing their best to avoid the game, we have a list of things to do that will ensure you stay football free this weekend.

“They do have a very vast selection of items to purchase but so long as the money raised goes direct to this worthy cause (which we know it does as we have 2 official Help for Heroes local volunteers as a part of our group who work very closley with Help For Heroes) then who cares what they sell as long as it's helping the troops!! In actual fact a lot of the sillier items Help For Heroes sell the lads in Afghanistan enjoy recieving in morale boxes to have a laugh with and entertain themselves in between operations. In fact our group have just sent out a few boxes full of silly donated england hats which i know they are very grateful for. Start flying the flag, these real heroes deserve your support xx”

“"Start displaying Help For Heroes Car Flags"
Good idea .. but I when I went to the site to order one, I was a bit surprised at the selection of tacky promotional products for sale . Don't you think that ladies knickers, teddy bears, 'action bras' and beach towels rather trivialises this very worthy cause?”

“Oh......Pooh ! Cue another major "sulk" from me. The joys of being an England fan. Still, lets look on the bright side. It cured me of THAT song, and I remembered lots of sweariwords that I don't use. Not sure the second part is very good though. My father suggested that we "couldn't pass water, never mind a small leather thing"......Excuses.....Time to continue with enormous sulk....”

“If People are going to take down their England flags and decorations maybe it's time we show our troops in Afghanistan as much support as our England team??!! Start displaying Help For Heroes Car Flags and house decorations. At least the real professional heroes of our country take pride in their work and show utmost commitment to honour their country.”

“Neil, I know you're not a big TV fan but Channel 4 9pm tuesday, ironically enough all the Poles I know are behind us today even though Germany have Polish born players (mercenaries) I want England to win today, I think we will and I think Gerrard and Rooney if they are mentally focused will gel today, God knows what the players are thinking, it's all in the mind now, We can do it.”

“Who cares about football anyway? . The only time the flag is flown is for this boring game. Fly it any other time and you`ll be called a racist.”

“A German friend has invited me to his house to watch the game with all his family and friends. I told him I would be wearing my England gear and he said it wouldn't be a problem. Now if only I could remember where I put my Grandfathers 1943 Paratroopers epaulettes and helmet.......”
