FORMER Bristol City midfielder Scott Brown has been offered the chance to train at Grimsby Town.

Manager Neil Woods said he would be interested in the 25-year-old former Everton trainee – if he agreed to train at the club on an unconditional basis.

Brown put in an impressive display as a trialist in the 3-0 pre-season friendly victory at Winterton Rangers on Saturday.

He was selected on the right-flank and provided the cross for Sam Mulready's second goal.

An Everton academy graduate, Brown signed for Bristol City in 2004 and made more than 60 league appearances for the club before he broke his leg in a freak collision with team-mate Damian Spencer while on loan at Cheltenham Town in January 2007.

After a loan spell at Port Value and a return to Cheltenham, he was released by the Robins this summer.

Woods was pleased with Brown's performance at West Street but said he needs to work hard on his fitness: "Scott needs to get fit, you could see that.

"You can see he can play, but he needs to get fit. The offer will be there for him if wants to come in for a couple of weeks to get fit.

"It's up to him to make that decision. He's shown enough to show he can play football, but you have to get fit to play as well.

"If he's prepared to do two weeks without a guarantee at the end of it then we'd happily have a look at him."

Lewis Nightingale also featured for the Mariners on trial in the victory at West Street.

The 19-year-old was released by Huddersfield Town this summer after coming through the club's academy.

Although Nightingale put in a lively display at Winterton, Woods has ruled out pursuing the services of the central midfielder.

He said: "I think we've already got what Lewis can bring to us unfortunately.

"He's a good footballer, very bright and a nice lad.

"But I think some of the younger boys we've got can offer what he can."
