Bygones: Readers' mixed views despite picture clues
RECENTLY, Pat Salah questioned whether this photograph showed Fildes Street, Grimsby, as we had stated previously.
Now, David Bradley has been in touch with more information. He said: "I have had a word with a friend who also lived in the East Marsh and she said it is Fildes Street, as the shop on the corner was S Dine's Cycle Shop where she worked.

Can you help? Does this photograph show Fildes Street or Freshney Street, Grimsby?
"I trust that this small bit of information will help to clear up the query."
However, Brenda Plumtree (nee Norton) disagrees. She said: "It is definitely not Fildes Street. I used to live at 79 Fildes Street, near South Parade school."

"Gazbob", who commented on the article on our website, agrees.
He said: "Pat is right, Fildes Street never had the arched alleyways between every other house like this. This looks like Freshney Street, taken from the junction of Oliver Street, looking towards the Duke Of York Gardens.
"If the photographer had turned to the left to view the other side of the street Grimsby General Hospital would have been at the end. Looking at this view in the present you would be looking along Waterside Drive."

“Have just checked out an old map, Freshney Street has about 20 houses including the corner shop this side of Oliver St. Fildes has 32 - 34. This photo shows around 20, I would say that this is more likely to be Freshney St than Fildes St.”

“The street name plate looks too short to be Freshney st?”
