Calorie-blasting Piloxing power
Zumba maybe all the rage at the moment – but there's a new exercise in town and it's called Piloxing. Reporter Lucy Greensmith finds out more about the new exercise class that could sweep not only Grimsby, but the nation – and just in time for that new year fitness pledge, too!
YOU would never think boxing and pilates mix so well but they do – and we are lucky enough to have one of the first fully-qualified Piloxing instructors living in Grimsby.
There are only 50 instructors in the UK who have been put through their paces at a masterclass to qualify and it is proving very popular overseas in America with Hollywood celebrities.
It is a calorie-blasting work-out with intervals and it creates a good self-image, making women feel feminine, powerful and sexy.

It takes the power and speed of boxing with weighted gloves mixed with pilates basics involving posture and balance – all done in barefoot.
Helen Sadler, 33, of Ladysmith Road, who was a professional dancer on cruise ships for five years, was put through her paces in Bourne, Lincolnshire, to complete a nine-hour masterclass.
She heard about Piloxing from a person who she teaches Zumba to.
Helen said: "I was interested in it because it is something new and different to try out.
"The nearest instructor to here is in Gainsborough and the majority of them are based in London and Wales.
"Zumba classes saturate this area and it's time there was something new for people to try out.
"It is more structured then Zumba, and I am teaching Piloxing at Oasis Health Club because I believe it is aimed at people who go to the gym more.
"You have to be dedicated to keep going with Piloxing to become engrossed and wanting to learn more.
"I hope it will be as popular as Zumba because everyone has gone Piloxing crazy in America – but it just hasn't hit the UK yet."
Helen said Bokwa is becoming very popular, too, but it is repetitive compared to Piloxing.
"You use the letters of the alphabet for Bokwa to learn a routine – it's great fun, but it becomes too repetitive," she added.
Helen said after three or four weeks when participants have got the hang of techniques, they will add weighted gloves to build up the difficulty.
"The reason why you need to be barefoot during the class is because shoes stop messages going to the nerve system and plus it strengthens the feet," Helen added.
"It is a hard and challenging class, because I found it difficult with the weighted gloves on during my training.
"And as the weeks go on, the training will become more and more intense.
"It can burn 4,900 calories an hour and will be taught beginning with a warm-up, then blocks of boxing and pilates – I enjoy the ballet side of the pilates, too, because I have a background of dance.
"People need to give it a try and they'll see it is a good work-out and it is suitable not only for women but men too!"
Helen has a busy life, she teaches Zumba and Bokwa four times a week at Pure Gym in Grimsby and teaches her own dance lessons.
And when she came back onto dry land in January after dancing on cruise ships, she said she found it difficult to get back into life.
"All my friends have married, had children and their own homes – I didn't even know how to drive when I came back off the ships!" she added.
"I have learned to drive now and have my own car – but I need a sat nav to get around because I've forgotten where everywhere is with being away for so long.
"I performed two shows a night and worked on several ships, such as Balmoral, Fred Olsen Cruise Line and Ocean Cruises.
"But I realised this wasn't a realistic career because I was travelling constantly and I hadn't had Christmas at home for 12 years – because before I worked on ships, I performed at hotels."
Helen said parts of her life on the ships were glamorous – but it was hard and tiring.
Piloxing classes will begin at Oasis Health Club, in Grimsby, in the week commencing Monday, January 7. For more information, call the gym on 01472 251682.
