A NEIGHBOURHOOD-WIDE alcohol ban may be the solution to preventing drunken yobs from disturbing residents of otherwise quiet Grimsby streets – including those being treated at St Andrew's Hospice.

Residents and members of the Hainton and Heneage Forum say they have endured a catalogue of vandalism, theft and disturbances, affecting Lea Drive, Welholme Avenue and Peaks Lane – which is also home to the hospice and St Hugh's hospital.

Residents have had flower tubs and solar lights stolen from front gardens, where beer cans and bottles have been dumped.

The group has now handed a petition to North East Lincolnshire Council calling for an alcohol ban, CCTV and improved street lighting to try to clamp down on the problem.

Their call has also been backed by bosses at the YMCA and North East Lincolnshire Care Trust Plus mental health workers, which also have facilities based on Peaks Lane.

However, NELCs portfolio holder for neighbourhoods, Councillor Steve Beasant believes that in order for a ban to be effective, it needs to cover a wider area – including Hainton Avenue, Heneage Road and other surrounding streets.

“Also....while I have my self opinionated head on....totally agree with the vigilante coments, although I am a law abiding citizen and I don't altogether agree with taking the law into ones own hands, I do think it is difficult to stand by and watch whilst a soon to become majority of people in certain areas drag everything down that good hard working citizens have worked hard to acheave, and when calling the police only gives you a log number, usually over the phone, and a half hearted promise of a possible visit when the time can be found....what are people supposed to do?????”

“I will never understand why people feel the need to walk around the streets drinking, I was under the impression this problem was getting better but of late I have seen not just youngsters but parents with babies in prams walking through the streets with a can of lager in their hands....good influence on the toddlers there folks....one hand on pram handle the other with a can whilst toddlers run where they like....no joke....it happens....so although I think it's bad that youngsters do this it is not just a problem of theirs alone....and unless drinking in public is baned full stop I can't see anything changing.
I would love to see a complete ban on drinking in public, it'd stop many drunken brawls and those who just throw their bottles/cans where they take their last swig....it's not nice for children to see nor is it a very good example for the future generation who might just have more sense.”

“I live near to the Freshney in Fildes St in a no alcohol zone. Our street is a rat run for all the druggies in the area. You can set your watch by the times they go for their cider in the morning then off in the afternoon for their methadone. If it's a nice day they all congregate next to the river for a nice White Lightening picnic. If you dare walk over the bridge and look at them you get abuse and if they see which house you've gone into they'll bang on the door or window. I actually rang the police once when they were trying to drown one of their number. The police asked if I would go and calm the situation down and have a word with them until they got there. Of course I didn't go and I'm still waiting for the police to arrive 6 months later. The PCO's usually walk past with their heads down. The only thing we get from the council is residents being fined for parking on their own front, even with a permit. I didn't used to agree with vigilantes but I think I'm being turned.”
