He let himself in and found cannabis plants inside a tent in the bedroom.
Police later found 12 plants inside the tent, about three to four foot tall.
There was an electric heater blowing hot air into the tent and a water pipe, fertilizer and plant food were also found.
The cannabis yield was 67g and the total estimated future yield was 804g.
Samwell told police the cannabis was for his own personal use.
He started smoking cannabis as an 8-year-old boy and smoked it most evenings. He started growing it just after he moved in and was doing so to save money.
He told the officers he had bought a starter kit on the internet and researched what to do with it.
In court, Samwell told an earlier hearing he had nothing to say in mitigation but added that he worked in the demolition industry. He was ordered to carry out 80 hours of unpaid work and made subject to a 12-month community order. He was also ordered to pay £85 costs.
