MORE than 80 players took part in the 12th annual Humberside Saab Golf Day at Grimsby Golf Club.

Amid glorious weather, Humberside Saab – who are celebrating their 30th year in business – were overwhelmed by the support of their customers, who gave generously toward a raffle which raised more than £700 for the captain's charity.

Paul Coutts, immediate past captain at Grimsby, won the men's event and was the overall winner of the day after scoring 40 points. Sandy Glass was the runner-up.

The winning lady, with 39, was Pauline Smith, from runner-up Ann Brierley.

And the ladies' winner of the nearest the pin on the 2nd hole was Jean Wicks.

The club's popular Seniors Open, a betterball Stableford pair's competition off full handicap, attracted 172 golfers.

Play lasted from 8am to 3pm, involving golfers from 31 different clubs across

Lincolnshire and neighbouring counties, as well as some players from Hertfordshire and Kent.

The oldest competitor in the field, 78-year-old Gordon Cairns from Ashby Decoy Golf Club, Scunthorpe, won the event with his 65-year-old partner Tommy Sinclair, from Wheatley Golf Club, Doncaster. The duo scored 45.

Tommy Dunwell and Neale Franklin, also from Ashby Decoy, took second on 44, beating Driffield's Robin Langhamer and Brian Seville into third because of their better back-nine score.

Seven teams scored 43 points and after some careful examination of the scorecards, Peter Raspian and John Dooley – both from Blankney Golf Club, Lincoln – took fourth spot.

Club captain John Tinker made the presentations to the winning teams in the clubhouse afterwards and thanked the competition organisers and all the helpers for all their hard work.

The club enjoyed almost perfect golf conditions for its Clubhouse Trophy competition – a better ball Stableford pair's event open to all sections of the club: gents, ladies, seniors and juniors.

With there being little wind, the ball was running a long way on the dry fairways and the greens were very receptive and holding to a good approach shot.

Almost 200 competitors took part and 45 teams returned scores of 40 points or more. Father and son duo Ian and Marc Braithwaite – who have recently joined the club from Laceby – carded 47 points to win.

Janice Beardsley and Janet Smith finished second on 46 after they edged another father and son combination of Brian Cullum and son Stuart into third after a back-six countback.

Twelve members were winners in the twos club, but only Darren Tomlinson managed a two on the long 245-yard par-three 9th.
