Carrington battles in-form champion
GRIMSBY cueman Stuart Carrington lost 4-2 to Australian Open champion Barry Hawkins in the opening Players Tour Championship snooker event of the season.
Carrington, 22, returned to the baize for the first time since failing in his bid to re-qualify as a professional at the Q School in Sheffield in May.
Carrington beat Scottish amateur Marc Davis 4-2 in the second qualifying round as the PTC campaign rolled back into action at the South West Snooker Academy, in Gloucester.
But his progress was ended by defeat to world number 15 Hawkins in the first round proper.

Hawkins, who beat Peter Ebdon 9-3 in the final to win the Australian Open earlier this month, went on to reach the quarter-finals.
He lost to Stephen Maguire, who went on to win the PTC event – seeing off Jack Lisowski 4-3 in the final.
Carrington will return to action for the second PTC event, also in Gloucester, on August 8.
He may be joined by fellow Grimsby amateurs Ashley Wright and Jamie Barrett, who recently won the Theakstone's Snooker Challenge in Harrogate, North Yorkshire.
