Changes would be difficult to believe
DEAR dad, well it's been about 20 years since you left us and it got me thinking what you would make of the country these days.
To begin, I have to tell you that the country is broken, due in no small way to crooked bankers and the complicity of the previous Labour Government.
There was a General Election about four months ago, which resulted in a coalition between the Tories and the Liberal Democrats, who have told the electorate that there will be many years of austerity to put the country back in the black.
We have been engaged in two conflicts since you passed away, one with Iraq and the other still ongoing, with Afghanistan of all places.
Both these wars have cost the lives of hundreds of young servicemen and are very unpopular with the general public.
The jails are overflowing with the result that offences that in your day would have meant a custodial sentence now amount to no more than a slap on the wrist.
Last week, in Blackpool, a woman, yes, a woman, was convicted of urinating and committing a sex offence on the town's war memorial.
Her sentence amounted to nothing more than a good telling off from the magistrate.
I've saved the six medals you were awarded for giving six years of your life to the country in the Second World War, but I'm sure if you came back today you would wonder why you bothered!
Mr K Murray (address supplied).
The Telegraph says
Comparing life and society 20 years apart would always bring up stark comparisons. Will 2010 only be known as the bleakest of times?

“Oh god here he is again with his 'my comment touched a nerve' ZERO INTELLIGENCE and yet again i see that nobody on here even mentions your so called name. Have you maybe stopped to think that nobody actually cares what you have to say and unlike everyone else who comments your views are deleted because you are incapable of writing anything without being offensive....complete plank!!”

You don't want to believe the truth so you never will.
This is how our once glorious country has sunk into a third world state.
Go help the believers cos the athiests won't”

“S~sigh~ Once more for the cheap seats.
You made the bizarre statement that rich black folk do not try to help impovershed black folk, even though 'saint' David Beckham does.
My evidence was names of rich black folk that do, and have helped in such a way. Proving your statement wrong. Again.
You simply state facts that you make up, or quote things that are 20-30 years out of date and not relevant anymore.”

neil -- you know that irony and 'english' wit is invisible to some peeple even if you use a smily ::-) or a grumpy :-( -- even fightin peeple do'n' often gerrit, if ever.
jo -- it's mebbe the p-c gt that censored neil's 'lady by gaslight'. i'll try to demonstrate:
not every tom dick or harry needs the gt's protection from the use of good old english verbs, nouns and proper names!
let me try again. not every t o m, d i c k or h a r r y...

p.s. jo -- i wish i'd written that 1st salvo on 08-Sep-2010 @ 10:44! i've been busy in The Shed trying to deal with 'the spanish question' (that you'll have noticed has reared up again) and missed it all -- but you KNOW that we're in the dead horse department when it comes to stopping or starting anything from our end of the cahin of command!”
