HAS texting, Facebook and Twitter taken over talking, person to person?

Yes, I myself do text a lot, but have never used the other two, nor wish to do so!

The other week I went to pick up a mate who said you will have to wait as I am busy on Facebook.

Then while I took him in my car to where we were going, he spent the full time click, click, clicking away on Facebook.

I said to him, these friends, do you actually meet them or phone them or do some stuff with them? He said, no, why?

Correct me if I am wrong, but I always thought friendship was about doing stuff together, be it going to the pub, sports events, or just tea or coffee?

It's not about looking at a screen all day and all night. That's all a bit impersonal to me and all too safe. Also texts can be misread, you need to see a person's face to really know them, don't you?

Does the future hold the lack of true friends? What's wrong with phoning your friends or writing them a letter, or better still actually going out with them, or is that too way out of thought?

A Lucas (address supplied).

The Telegraph says

Social networking has changed the way the younger generation interact. Many may find it alien but how many of us write letters these days? Times have changed.

“Ooh ! I got "zapped" again. Dunno why.....It was a very innocuous comment.”

“And I am NOT phoning back for an explanation. It costs a fortune to translate another "gloat"...”

“"Who writes letters",GT? Me. You know, because you print them. My sis and her daughter have perfected the art of sending gloating postcards from Bermuda. At least I can understand them, which is more than can be said for their texts....”
