DARYL Clare's Louth Town maintained their top-three position in the Northern Counties East League Division One table with a battling 0-0 draw against Eccleshill United.

Despite being held at Park Avenue, boss Clare – the former Grimsby Town striker – was happy with his side's overall performance.

He said: "I am not unhappy with the result. I asked the team for a clean sheet and that's what they gave me.

"The defence is getting better with every match. I thought Eccleshill were the best footballing side we have seen here this season and, considering the awful conditions, both teams did well".

Despite a sodden pitch and still some injuries causing gaps in the first team, Louth started well.

However, they had a penalty appeal waved away early on by referee Ben Cass.

On 11 minutes, Matt Kennedy placed the ball in the net after some good build-up play – but much to the disgust of the home supporters, it was disallowed for offside.

Eccleshill mounted some attacks of there own, but White Wolves goalkeeper Ian MacTaggart coped well.

Louth's Paul Goodhand got past two Eccleshill defenders, but reinforcements arrived and denied him of a chance.

The home side came out for the second half still in high sprits. They kept up the pace and barely let the ball go still for a second.

In the 79th minute Goodhand, Broughton and Willoughby came off and Armstrong, Coulam and Ella replaced them.

Eccleshill also made changes, but neither side could break the deadlock.

Although there were no goals, Louth played well. Carl Martin was named man of the match.

Louth Town: MacTaggart; Manders, Appleby, Martin, Stevens, Hyland, Dan Pawson, Goodhand, Willoughby, Kennedy, Broughton. Subs: Coulam, Armstrong, Ella, Clare.
