CLEETHORPES Cricket Club has signed South African quick bowler Graham Hume as their overseas professional for 2012.

The 21-year-old plays for Gauteng in the CSA Provincial competition, has represented South Africa Under-19s at the 2010 World Cup and also represented the South Africa Academy when they toured Bangladesh in 2011.

In 20 first class matches he has taken 69 wickets at a healthy average of 17.

With the bat, he averages 23 and already has a first class 50 to his name.

The signing of Hume – which is subject to UK Border Agency approval – underlines the Meggies' ambitions for the upcoming season.

They hope the addition of a spearhead to the established bowling attack of Harry Clewitt, Andy Ellis and Alex Osmond will turn them into real Yorkshire League title contenders.

Cricket chairman Paul Hewstone said: "It was really important we built on all the positives from last season, so we are absolutely delighted to have signed a player of Graham's quality and potential.

"It has been clear for a while we have needed an opening bowler and Graham will provide that new ball threat we have been missing."

Hume is expected to arrive in Cleethorpes at the start of April.

“This new signing by Cleethorpes CC could bring some real excitement to Chichester Road this summer. The sight of opposing batsmen having to hop around against pace bowling always keeps spectators on the edge of their seats, and is something that has been lacking from the Cleethorpes side for some time. If their batsmen carry on as they finished last season there is every chance of the Yorkshire League title returning to Lincolnshire for a second time.”
