MORE than 100 distressed visitors to Cleethorpes have been helped by the resort's Street Angels this year.

The figure was revealed as the volunteers, who provide advice, water and flip-flops to vulnerable revellers in the resort, braced themselves for their busiest spell over Christmas and new year.

ADVICE AVAILABLE: Tracey Redgrift, right, meets volunteer Ian Pearson - one of the Street Angels patrolling Cleethorpes

The latest to be given support was a young man who was slightly drunk and had become separated from friends.

He had forgotten which hotel he was booked into but Street Angels spotted him and were able to help him, stay with him while he bought some chips and see him safely into a taxi.

Nearly 100 towns and cities across the UK have adopted similar schemes.

The Angels' aim is to help make night-time communities as safe, and fun, as possible, offering help and providing a reassuring presence.

This month, during the countdown to Christmas, the volunteers face a busy time.

Drink can cause people to become disorientated and vulnerable, and for many people Christmas can be particularly stressful or lonely.

Jackie Fortune, Street Angel co-ordinator for North East Lincolnshire, said: "Many of the folk we help have got themselves into trouble of one sort or another because they have over-indulged even before they have left home.

"One of the keys to a great, safe and trouble-free night out is to know your limit and to stick to it.

"May we take this opportunity to wish the volunteers, supporters, those we meet and all those we help a very merry Christmas"

Jackie can be contacted at the City Church office from Tuesday to Friday 9am to 4.30pm by calling 01472 240071 or email: jackie@nelcitychurch.org.uk

“If I acted 'distressed' down Cleethorpes the most likely outcome would be a attempted kicking or arrested. Water! stuff that, get me voddy. I won't be seen dead in flipflops. Smack.”
