Cleveland's a little bit country
New Cleveland Club in Cleveland Street recently started a Thursday night Country Music Club and it has really taken off.
A good-sized audience enjoys the country music and line-dancing with the resident artiste on stage being the very experienced favourite Alf Berry.
When I paid the club a visit he was in fine voice. Alf uses backing tracks and his guitar for accompaniment with his songs, including Merle Haggard's Okie From Muskogee, Good Year For The Roses by George Jones and Lonesome Me by Don Gibson.
One of the things that appealed to me was the warm and friendly atmosphere and, during the evening, guest singers, including some well-known names, were encouraged to get up and sing a couple of numbers.

All in all, it was a good night for the New Cleveland and it is also free entry. I hope it gets the support it deserves and they keep the country club going for years to come.
Saturdays are cabaret nights at the Cleveland and a charity night has been organised for later in the year with all proceeds going to the Dove House hospice. The rock'n'roll charity show featuring the 1950s and 1960s covers band Memory Lane is penciled in for Friday, November 20.
FOR some time now, the Country Park Inn in Hessle Foreshore has featured evenings showcasing some of the top cabaret and tribute acts.
Over the next few months, the acts include the excellent Abba tribute Abba Fever on Friday, September 28. Friday, October 5, features the rock'n'roll sounds of local group The Aces and throughout December some great party nights and tribute shows are planned, including a Foreigner and Journey tribute night.

I FIRST met the musical theatre trio Unmasked during the Mail's Star Search 2012. Their new show includes something for everyone, from musical theatre to rock'n'roll, pop, jazz and soul. They are appearing at the Wassand Arms in Hull in their Unmasked – Stage & Screen show.
The night includes music from the some of the best loved films with close harmony, solos, duets and group songs. With a full stage set and equipment Unmasked are suitable for most events. You can catch them when they play the Wassand Arms on Saturday, September 22.
GIGS of note this week include Faith Share at the Old Goole Working Men's Club on Friday night; rock band The Liberated at the Royal Charter pub in Western Gailes Way, Hull, on Saturday night; and Bobby at the RAOB club in Goole on Sunday night.
