AS THREE schools in North East Lincolnshire officially became academies yesterday, another refurbished college was preparing to welcome 750 youngsters for a new term.

Pupils from the now-defunct St Mary's Catholic High School and Matthew Humberstone Church of England School will meet for the first time next week at their new place of education – St Andrew's College.

As reported, the college is sited in Chatsworth Place, Cleethorpes – the former site of Matthew Humberstone's upper school.

Principal Peter Cantley said: "We are more than ready to welcome our new students."

Meanwhile, Healing School and Tollbar Business and Enterprise College were among 32 high-achieving schools in the country to be granted academy status by the Government for this school term, and the former Lindsey School has been reopened as the Cleethorpes Academy.

“Thanks for the horror story Wes. I think you will find that the Saint Andrew that the school is named after never actually set foot in Kent!
He was one of Jesus' apostles; brother of Simon Peter and a fisherman. And I agree with other comments, it's a school not a college.”

“If you read history books, St Andrew was avidly against educating the lower classes and fought many battles throughout these isles to bring to an end all forms of learning. Indeed in one famous battle in Kent he rampaged through a school building and massacred 48 children learning home economics, the staff were later found impaled on a wicker fence in Margate. I think he would be aggrieved to learn now, that his name is being sullied in such a grievous manner.”

“Call it what you will but at the end of the day it's a school!
It's the staff and pupils who will make a difference and by having respect for each other, they can make a difference.
    Good luck to you all”
