Corporation generation
THE Corporation Road area of Grimsby, its residents and shops, has been a very popular subject with Bygones readers. Here we print some more of your memories.
Mrs TJ Willey, of Holton-le-Clay, said: “Reading about Mr Gooseman the chemist brought back memories for me.
“As a four-year-old in 1940 I kicked a pan of boiling water over, badly scalding my foot. Apparently, when hospital was mentioned I screamed so loudly that my mother put me in my little brother’s pushchair and wheeled me across town to Mr Gooseman’s chemist.
“He treated me several times until it healed. And as my dad was a serving soldier in the Middle East he charged nothing, which was very kind of him and must have been a great help to my mum.”
Mr PM Robinson, of Stallingborough, wrote: “Regarding the Corporation Road area of the West Marsh and its many branches of streets that are no more. These streets carried a lot of social history and memories of families mostly no long gone.

A WINDOW ON THE PAST: The corner of Corporation Road and Rendel Street, Grimsby.
“I was born in 1933 at 44 Annesley Street. From there led a passage to Rendel Street, where my great-grandfather Walker had a passage house shop in the front room of No29, selling items of need to the locals. He also kept a grunter (pig) in the back yard.
“My great-uncle, Billy Walker, who was badly gassed in the Great War and was left an invalid (there was no support in those days for these unfortunate men), could be seen pushing a barrow around the streets doing odd jobs. My grandparents lived at No27 and their name was Wood.

MAIN EVENT: The Rex cinema in Corporation Road, Grimsby.
“Families that come to mind are Rushby, Rowson, Stewart and Blendell. Wally Lord, who was well-known in local football and cricketing circles, also lived in Rendel Street.
“My mother was always flitting (not moonlighting) around the area. Apart from Annesley Street and Rendel Street, we lived in Frederick Street, Haycroft Street (top end), Haven Avenue and finally Cleveland Street, near the tip.
“On reflection, you can’t rebuild the past, but you can enjoy the memories, both good and bad, and count our blessings if we are still around to remember them.”
Mrs Ashton, of Haven Avenue, Grimsby, said: “I’ve been reading about Corporation Road in Bygones. It is very interesting, but I was a bit disappointed that no one mentioned the good old Rex Cinema.
“I had some lovely times there. I was an usherette for about four years and we always got a flea on us every night.
“We used to have some lovely times with the customers, and especially the kids on a Saturday.
“I just thought I’d let you know we had the good old Rex in Corporation Road, as well as the shops. Good old days.”
