Couple hope to clean up for donkeys' aid
A PENSIONER who feels she was pressured into buying a £1,595 vacuum cleaner five years ago wants to sell it to raise money for charity.
Doris Morley, 79, and husband Eric, 87, bought a vacuum cleaner from a "pushy salesman" after they were told they had "won" a free carpet shampoo and were unable to get rid of the salesman who arrived.

FRESH START: Eric and Doris Morley holding the carpet shampoo provided in used drinks bottles, and the carpet cleaning system.
"Now I realise that I probably didn't win anything – it was just an excuse for them to get in the door. Once he was in, he just would not go away," she said.
However, it is too heavy for Doris or Eric and they have only used it a handful of times since they bought it for £1,595 in 2007.

The couple are now hoping to sell it to raise money for Bransby, a rescue centre for horses and donkeys near Lincoln to which Doris is a regular contributor.
"I felt like I was hoodwinked into buying it. It's no good to us but it might be useful for people who have a large house or run a business – it does all sorts.
"It has been in my conservatory unused for so long that I thought I may as well sell it and put some of the money to good use," added Doris.
If you are interested, call Doris or Eric via the Grimsby Telegraph on 01472 360360.

“Is it by any chance a kirby vacuum cleaner as this is extremely familiar. In my more innocent youth I applied for many jobs with increasing desperation. I was accepted for a position selling these things. The trick was to cold call saying they had won a free carpet clean, once in the door, you demonstrate the product, which is pretty good to be fair, but then comes the hard sell. Since I had and still have a conscience, I never used the hard sell and lasted less than a week on commission only. I got paid no money, and it taught me sales was not a career for me, but I remember well the tricks and methods I was told to use, and which my boss and colleagues regularly employed. It still appalls me that such people continue to take advantage of vulnerable persons. I know that not all sales people are like that by the way. Just unethical ones. Good luck to this couple.”

“not2bothered:
How right you are -wonder who was using the communal brain cell when this story was published?
Should have asked for people interested to contact GT and maybe asked for auction style biddings. Good Luck Mr & Mrs Morley, a nice thought, so hope nice things come to you in return.”

“Is it wise to publish pensioners telephone numbers on the internet? Especially ones who have been highlighted as susceptible to being pressured into purchasing things they don't want. Telegraph, I can't believe how irresponsible you can be sometimes.
It's very nice of them donate the money raised from the sale, I hope they get a good price for it.”
