Cricket: Rose and Crown edge tight semi
ROSE and Crown overcame Phoenix in a nail-biting semi-final of the Grimsby and District Cricket League's 25-over League Cup.
After making a steady start, Phoenix lost their first wicket in the ninth over when Gavin Turner (5-1-12-1) picked up a deserved wicket with 34 on the board.
Jason Stead followed two overs later, having made 26.
Zubair and Waheed then pushed the score up to 86 with a third-wicket partnership of 45, when the latter was dismissed for 25.
Rose and Crown were guilty of a number of dropped catches and Zubair made them pay with a good 51 as Phoenix closed on 126 for six.
Ian Wheatley and Turner gave Rose and Crown a fine start with an opening stand of 53. Turner (34) was the first to go in the tenth over.
The visitors quickly lost their next wicket, then also lost their third wicket for 86 when Wheatley was bowled by Waheed (5-1-20-1) for 26.
Like their opponents, Phoenix were also poor in the field, allowing Kev Young to make an important 26, before Ken Meech (19 not out) and Keiron Wressell (11 not out) guided Rose and Crown home to a six-wicket win with one over to spare.
Harvest Moon reached the final after defeating newcomers Healing Royal British Legion by seven wickets.
