THIS giant fish finger has been frying the flag for Grimsby on a top BBC One gameshow.

The gigantic costume was donned by 31-year-old Katie Finan, who works for Youngs, to film Winter Wipeout.

She travelled to Argentina for two days to take part in the show, but to find out if she was a fish out of water – or right at home – you'll have to tune in on Saturday.

Katie, of Louth, has a chance of winning £10,000 if she successfully tackles the daring water-based obstacle course, a version of Total Wipeout.

"We went to the set and it was amazing," she said. "You could see the set all laid out with the iconic Big Red Balls.

"It was bonkers and the weirdest feeling thinking I would soon be jumping about on them.

"We spent the morning filming the intro sections and interview with presenter Amanda Byrom – she was lovely and really friendly off set.

"It was 32 degrees centigrade and they had me jumping up and down in the giant fish finger, dancing, spinning round, naming fish species and shouting random things to the camera – I loved every minute of it.

"I walked up to the top of the course and I cannot explain how nervous, scared and excited I was. My heart was nearly beating out of my chest.

"The klaxon went and I ran as fast as I could and each time I was knocked down I got up and ran again.

"I can't go into any detail about how I got on or how well I did – but I finished it and it was the most exhausted I have ever been in my life.

"I have never felt so on top of the world during that moment. I looked back at the course and thought, 'Oh my, look what I've done!'"

The rest of the experience remains top secret because she can't give anything away before the show is aired.

Katie's experience began back in July. A friend suggested she should apply, so she went to an audition in London.

Katie, who works in the graphic communications team at Young's, said: "I spent ages thinking about what I would say in one minute for the auditions, so I decided to write a poem over Eye Of The Tiger.

"I felt a little daft walking down the street in my get-up, but as I walked into the room, my worries soon disappeared.

"I was stood around waiting with half naked people, people in full lycra body suits, at least four supermen, body builders and an Elf to name a few.

"It was finally my turn and the horn went ... so I ran up to the desk pressed play and disaster, the intro was in the wrong place!

"I paused and just thought what the hell just sing it, so I just kept going.

"I was given a ticket on the door when I finished and asked where the exit was. The woman said 'You got through'. I couldn't believe it because I had made such a mess of it!"

The next stage was to fill out more forms, and Katie was told a staggering 30,000 people had applied. She then had to complete a basic obstacle course, and was told the producers would be in touch within two weeks.

"It seemed ages for the phone call – I waited and waited," said Katie.

"I was on the M62 when I got a flat tyre. I pulled over to the hard shoulder and a withheld number rang. My heart started going again.

"The woman said, 'How would you like to come to Argentina?' I went crazy, I was screaming and jumping around on the hard shoulder like a wild thing.

"A couple of lorry drivers beeped their horns, probably thinking I was crazy!"

Winter Wipeout is screened this Saturday on BBC One at 6.15pm.
