Any cyclist that pays income tax contributes towards the roads. I totally agree however, if they have no lights, are riding recklessly, riding on the footpaths, jumping or ignoring red lights then they should be given a fine (a heavy one at that). But when was the last time you saw or even heard of plod cracking down on the sort of cyclists that give the rest of us a bad name.”

“I never ever said motorsts have more right to be on the road, cyclists should contribute towards the usage of,also if they have no lights,or are riding recklessly then they should be given a fine and or points or something similar, more cyclists use the footpaths than i care to mention,is that not A safety issue for pedestrians ? Dont even go on about how many miles one drives thats not the issue,i pay roadtax and insurance and have to display my LIGHTS when its appropriate and so should cyclists, stand in Great Coates ,for example,on an early weekday morning and count the cyclists without adequate lighting and or riding on the footpaths, you will soon need a new pencil to tally them all up”

“It's far from nit picking redone66 I am fed up with motorists trotting out the old "I pay road tax you don't " mantra to justify why they have more right to be on the road than cyclists.
Vehicle Excise Duty is based on the vehicles emissions per km, it doesn't matter whether you drive 1 mile or 1000,000 miles in a year, you pay the same, therefore it is not a tax on a drivers use of the roads. VED gives them no more right to be on the highway than a cyclist.”

“If drivers are supposed to travel in a manner and at a speed from which they can safely stop in an emergency then surely the same applies to cyclists. There are quite a few lycra clad speedsters who would be in real trouble if forced to an emergency stop. The other major irritation is when they refuse to use the cycle lanes even when they are quite separate from the carriageway as on Humberston Road and Hewitts Avenue/Circus.”

."Good citizen,i know not all cyclists are bad, however if they wish not to be classed as second class road users then why shouldnt they pay some form of road tax??
I pay Vehicle Excise Duty (note I didn't say Road Tax because that doesn't exist) on the 2 cars I own, I also have 3rd party insurance for my bike, on which by the way, I cover well over 120 miles a week. So I have as much right to be on the road as the next person and not be treated with distain by some very ignorant drivers.”

"They do not use the cycle lanes properly that we as rate payers have paid through the nose".
Most of the time the reason that cyclists don't use the cycle lanes is due to the fact that the lanes are full of cars left there by their inconsiderate owners i.e. Wheelsby Road between Nuns Corner and the Parkway.”

“Good citizen,i know not all cyclists are bad, however if they wish not to be classed as second class road users then why shouldnt they pay some form of road tax?? I am also sick of how many cyclists steer from the pavement into the road, mainly via a dropped kerb without looking behind them, many times i have had to avoid them,so cyclists think once think twice, think have i got a brain,THEN USE IT !! simples....”

“I am both a cyclist and a motorist. I have been both for a number of years now. There can be improvements from both sides - this should not be an 'us and them' argument. As a driver I have seen shoddy driving from fellow motorists - undertaking above the speed limit in bus lanes, mobile phones, not looking properly at junctions and having near misses with other cars and cyclists.
I have also seen the shoddy cyclists. No lights on a dark night, no indicating, pulling out in front of moving cars without warning. Then there's the pedestrians, I cycle often at a good speed on a road bike so I am kitted out appropriately with high visibility clothing, lights and a helmet. That doesn't stop pedestrians stepping out into the gutter on a main road without warning as they're crossing a road - straight into my path when I may be travelling at speeds around 25mph. They then will shout and hurl abuse at *me* for being shocked as I have to call loudly for them to step back (a bell is useless at the speeds a road cycle achieves). It takes a lot to cycle safely at these speeds and I do my level best, but others need to take responsibility for their actions and safety on the road too.
Everyone should be taking that extra step to look out for each other on the roads, whether cyclist, motorist or pedestrian. We all need to be that bit more aware what is happening around us. And cyclists please help by getting some high visibility clothing, the nights are pulling in fast and it's only a few weeks until the clocks change. An item that might cost a couple of quid from Boyes or Aldi may save your life.”
