PAUL Hurst heaped praise on super-sub Dayle Southwell after the youngster grabbed his first goal of the campaign in Grimsby Town's 2-0 win at Hereford.

When Greg Pearson was forced off through injury after only 25-minutes, the joint bosses introduced the youngster, below, for his second taste of first-team action this season.

And the forward repaid the faith shown in him by firing the Mariners in front with a well-taken finish before Shaun Pearson added the second in a stunning five-minute salvo.

Hurst said: "Dayle was excellent for us. Greg had got a bit of a groin injury.

"He went for a ball and got a bit of a nudge and he felt it open up a little bit too much.

"He didn't shout over but, just looking at him, he looked to be struggling a little. He'd had a tight groin earlier in the week so we brought him off.

"Me and Rob (Scott) had talked about getting Dayle on. He'd done really well in pre-season and in training and was looking sharp.

"Funnily enough, I took him to one side the other day to tell him to keep doing what he has been doing because we're extremely happy with him.

"While he will say that he's always ready to come in, we have to pick the right times and we felt that Saturday was the right time.

"He came on and he grabbed a great goal for us. He was a willing runner all afternoon and held the ball up well, which is a big part of a centre forward's play.

"I'm sure he will remember Saturday for a long time."

Forgive me for being picky but Dayle Southwell was born in Oxford, although i agree with your other comments.

“Typical absence of comments after a great win on Sat. If we'd lost, the pages would be full of snide remarks. Anyway, come on Town and thump Barrow tomorrow. They haven't won yet and we seem to be on fire. Attack attack attack. UTM.”
