Deal to cut Humber Bridge tolls rejected by government
A DEAL to halve the Humber Bridge tolls has been rejected by the government.
As reported yesterday, Hull City Council had put forward a proposal to take on all of the bridge's outstanding debt.

The government has rejected a deal which would have seen Hull City Council take on all of the Humber Bridge's outstanding debt
But the Grimsby Telegraph understands that the proposal has already been dismissed as a non-starter by Department for Transport officials.
Back in November the government announced that it was prepared to write off £150-million of the £332-million debt to allow tolls for cars to be reduced from £3 to £1.50 per crossing.
However, this is conditional on the outstanding debt of £182-million being shared in a more "equitable arrangement" between "all relevant local authorities".
It was originally proposed to split the debt four ways between the Humber authorities.
However, North East Lincolnshire Council (NELC) refused to agree to underwriting 25 per cent of the debt, saying that the split should be based on population.
Leader of NELC Chris Shaw, who had given his backing to Hull's proposal, said: "I'm very sad that we had an agreed way forward and that has been rejected. We are back to square one.
"NELC is still prepared to sit down and discuss this matter with the other three authorities and the Department for Transport.
"Our position is very clear. We want to see the tolls come down in April but we can't do it to the detriment of the residents of North East Lincolnshire.
"A share of between 17 and 18 per cent is my negotiating position and without another mandate from full council I can't budge on that."
Cleethorpes MP Martin Vickers said: "It doesn't surprise me as the government had made it clear that it wanted all of the unitary authorities in on the deal.
"Every week's delay is costing individuals and businesses in this area money at a time when they are particularly hard pressed, and I would urge the authorities to get their acts together and reach an agreement as quickly as possible."
Brigg and Goole MP Andrew Percy said: "This just demonstrates what I have been saying all along that Chris Shaw's silly games are risking the whole deal. And if the deal falls through, Chris Shaw's own area, which will benefit most from the toll reduction, will be damaged more than most."

“Talk about the councillors bickering - there are enough bickerings in these posts too - reminds me of an old song: 'too busy fighting your irrelevant battles to what's going on in your own back yard'. From my observations, it doesn't matter which party is represented by the councillors, they mirror the voters exactly - petty little schoolkid attitudes! It's not about which colour your flag is, its about cutting the tolls, improving business, improving employment, improving housing, improving people's lives.”

“As this and other failures develop, I am reminded by Chris Shaw of the expression Midas touch!
But:
Everyone has heard of the Midas touch, not everyone has heard of his opposite, King Sadim. They may not know him, but they most assuredly have seen him in action. Sadim is Midas written backwards. And just as his name indicates, he is the opposite of Midas. If the king of Phrygia transformed everything into gold, King Sadim has the power to deteriorate everything he touches. If the business is profitable, he is able to make it lose money; if the idea is good, he is able to ruin it; if there is friendship and cooperation, he quickly installs distrust and discord. King Sadim is an extremely insecure person with very low self-esteem. However, since he is unable to work out his weak points, because he does not even admit to having any, he uses arrogance to hide them even from himself. King Sadim never recognizes himself as such. He believes he is a Midas, though the results of his actions are always there to unmask him. But of course, that does not stop him. Sadim is a master at blaming others for his own blindness and incompetence, and he believes piously in the fantasies he invents to disguise his failures. And he moves forward, dauntless, unaware of the path of destruction he leaves behind."”

"Kirke, mindofmyown,
If you had been following this closly you would appriciate that Shaw has never had all the paperwork or been privy to all the information. Why, because NELC are not members of the Bridge Board so have been kept out of the inner circle discussions.
No wonder Chris Shaw is a laughing stock:
NELC is not on the bridge board,
NELC is not privy to bridge financial information,
NEL is no where near the bloody Humber Bridge according to my maps!
Given such a high degree of disconnect with the bridge, why does the NELC see fit to risk our taxpayers money to underwrite the operating costs?
There is no sound argument about commuting costs.....people in the UK commute all over but their councils do not contribute to transport infrastructure.
Whilst I sympathise with hospital trips over the bridge being expensive, it is not fair to single out one section of the NEL public for free passes. I would agree with the Health service reimbursing transport costs.....but they seem too mindset on charging us for carparks anyway.
I use the bridge regularly and often go the full length of our side A-15 feeder road with out seeing another vehicle! As you turn off the A-180 the majority of traffic including lorries continues west! I accept Grimsby and it's transport may have dealings north of the Humber, but that is no concern of the local council tax payer!
Given the above just what are we doing even getting involved in a bridge that has nothing to do with us at all. As far as we are concerned it is just a part of the UK road system, as is the bridge over the Ancholme or the Ouse.
I object to having to pay road tax, vehicle tax, fuel tax, bridge tolls etc. And the scam of us taxpayers being charged interest in paying back our money loan we provided in the first place is a scandal.
If Chris Shaw gets us involved in the bridge, that's another fine mess to add to his list! Operating costs could be a can of worms as the cable strands keep pinging when they snap LOL.
What Chris Shaw could do is find out how the Bridge Board have allowed the debt to increase since day one, causing massive interest charges. But as some one else has said, he is not listened too and not taken seriously.”

“Mindofmyown,
I was with Chris Shaw on Friday night, my name is Edward George (Christian and Surname).
Your parents Don'thava (funny Christian name) and Notgot (yet another funny Christian name) Mindofmyown must be really proad of their offspring.
I will leave you with the final words Shaw said to me on Friday night " At last other people are trying to talk to us at last and not just talk at us.”

“You're as mine of information TedGeorge - you must be very close to Chris Shaw for him to confide in you like that - much too close to give an impartial or reliable opinion. Methinks it would be very embarrassing if your true identity was revealed!
If Cllr Shaw had not received the information he would have made sure that he was given it before he made a fool of himself.
I stand by my earlier comment that he has been caught out not reading the briefing notes properly!!”

If you had been following this closly you would appriciate that Shaw has never had all the paperwork or been privy to all the information. Why, because NELC are not members of the Bridge Board so have been kept out of the inner circle discussions. If Cllr Steve Brady and Alan Johnson MP had not insisted the NELC finance officer would have not been invited to last Thursdays Finance Officers meeting for that reason. It was from that meeting that Chris Shaw met with them on Friday Afternoon and was handed all the paperwork and Bridge reports. At the same time the Leaders of North Lincs and East Yorkshire Councils attended the Humber LEP meeting trying to undermine any agreement. As time goes on the more we her about Liz Redfern and Steve Parnaby, it was never about a good deal it was about rubbing North East Lincolnshire nose in it for electing a Labour run Council.”

“mindofmyown. I too have a mind of my own. I have no political bias, nor do I attend such events you are alluding to. I get my info from unbiased sources who I happen to know are reliable, NOT through the petty politics of small minded small town councillors. Thank you.”

“Luckily the social events that I go to aren't cursed by the presence of the likes of Chris Shaw. The events where Kirke and TedGeorge are given this information wouldn't by any chance be connected to the Labour party would they?
I don't think you will find much honest criticism of the Labour leader from the people you are likely to meet there!!”

“"Chris Shaw said he had now been given an understanding that NEL would not be liable for any of the current debt. The only thing NEL would now be liable for would be the operating costs, and then only would agree once the figures had been checked as it says in the Telegraph. The original offer was for NEL to underwrite 25% of the repayments of the remaining £182 million debt."
That was always the situation, as I have been told today. Clearly backpeddling due to what 'mindofmyown' is suggesting.
"typical Tories"
Thanks for clarifying that you have a clear political bias. How constructive of you.”

“Looks to me like someone didn't bother to read the information properly.
After all of those years in opposition criticising everyone else it turns out that Labour is even worse!
Let's hope that people come to their senses and vote for someone else in May!”
