A GRIMSBY man was killed in a motorbike crash just hours after leaving a relative's birthday party, an inquest heard.

Anthony Trownson, 36, suffered fatal injuries when his Honda 600cc motorbike hit a kerb in Grimsby Road, Waltham, on April 28 last year.

An inquest into his death at Cleethorpes Town Hall heard Mr Trownson was travelling at about 60mph – twice the speed limit – and had drunk more than double the drink-drive limit of alcohol when he lost control of the bike.

Mr Trownson, of Winchester Avenue, was not licensed or insured to ride the machine, which he had bought three weeks earlier, the inquest was told.

Speaking at the hearing, accident investigator Pc John Rusted described the crash as "an entirely avoidable incident".

He said Mr Trownson had placed himself at a "significant disadvantage" and that his ability to ride the machine would have been "impaired by alcohol".

The inquest was told Mr Trownson had been travelling south on the B1203 Grimsby Road, Waltham, at about 7.40am when he overtook a car, lost control, hit the kerb on the wrong side of the road, swerved across the road and hit the kerb on the other side, before being thrown from the machine.

Susan Sargent told the inquest she had been driving south along Grimsby Road when she was overtaken by Mr Trownson and saw him crash.

She said: "He seemed to be going fast and when he went from one side to the other it was as if he wasn't in control."

Daniel Rising, who was driving in the opposite direction, told the inquest he braked to avoid Mr Trownson, who was heading towards him on the wrong side of the road.

Mr Rising said Mr Trownson came across the front of his car, before clipping the kerb on the other side of the road.

He added: "Not at any stage could I see that he was in control."

Mr Trownson was taken by ambulance to Grimsby's Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8.25am.

A post mortem examination carried out by Dr Martin Peters concluded the cause of death was multiple injuries, the most significant being a tear at the root of the aorta.

A toxicology report revealed that Mr Trownson had 165mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood. The legal limit is 80mg.

Pc Rusted, of Humberside Police, told the inquest Mr Trownson was not licensed or insured to use the bike.

He said that Mr Trownson had left a house party in the early hours of the morning of the crash and was believed to have ridden to his fiancee's house on Quantock Road, Scartho.

PC Rusted said a rear tyre was under-inflated, but the bike was otherwise free from defects.

He said the weather was fine and dry, the road surface damp, and visibility fine, and concluded the main factor causing Mr Trownson to crash was the amount of alcohol in his system.

Mr Trownson's mother Coral Trownson told the inquest that on the night before the crash her son had gone to his cousin's 18th birthday party at a house on the Nunsthorpe Estate.

She was not aware he had been riding the motorbike, believing it to be locked up, and only later found out it had been stored at his fiancee's home.

Coroner Paul Kelly who recorded a verdict of accidental death, said to Mrs Trownson: "I am sorry you lost him in such tragic circumstances. If it is any consolation, the main injury that was identified would have caused Tony's death very quickly indeed."

“Grimmi, I have done lots of things that I regret and am far from perfect, however, none of them involved putting my own and other's lives in danger. It is FORTUNATE that no-one was hurt, nothing more. We all wish his family and friends well and are not condemning him as a person, just his actions at the time.”

“I don't think anyone wishes this outcome to an accident, but the posters on here are correct. I travel this road every day to work and usually at that time, I for one would not have wanted to have my life endangered by the thoughtless actions of another, nor would the drivers who had to swerve to avoid him that day who could also have been killed. May he RIP, but I concur, it was a selfish, thoughtless and highly dangerous act.”

“Nobody is trying to gain anything Halifax, they are posting their comment on what his behaviour amounted too. Go preach your sympathetic nonsense elsewhere.”

“He may well been a fool for doing what he did but he paid the ultimate price for his apparent disregard. Whatever the case may be he's all square with the house now so calling him all the names under the sun isn't going to gain anything is it. May he R.I.P.”

“I'm very sorry that this man lost his life and sorry for his family and friends that he's left behind it must be so hard for them all! But he signed his own death certificate the second he got on that bike, it was a selfish act that unfortunately ended in death! What a fool! Drunk, speeding and not licensed or insured! Tut tut!”

This kind of behaviour degrades all motor cycle riders.”

“Selfish behaviour and fortunately the two people who ended up being witnesses weren't themselves involved more seriously through his actions.”
