Did Corporation bridge ever lift on its own?
I think my old brain may be playing tricks with me, watching the news in the tearoom this morning the news report said that Corporation bridge is close today, I asked two of the guys who are from Grimsby if they remember the bridge lifting of its own accord, I have a memory of it doing so during a hot summer in the 70's.
Can anyone else remember this happening or am I going mad?

Steve -- not sure what you mean in your 'post' above. Corporation Bridge is a Scherzer rolling lift bridge. The whole width of the road lifts in one piece, very quickly, for a bridge. In my long-distant youth I called after work frequently to have a muggatea with bridgemaster -- and a yarn about the bridge and old times: even THEN!”

“Oh yes, indeed, Corporation Bridge did open, frequently -- when Alexandra Dock - South Arm was a working dock and timber ships discharged there, and it was a short trip to the River Head where Humber yawls and ketches, etc, discharged cargoes several times a week to builders' merchants, millers, etc.
The Havens Archive, managed by Meridian Obsvtry Louth, has many, many, photographs of this, and other events in Alexandra Dock, the River Head basin and the West Haven.
All you have to do is ask. Needless to say, NONE of it is in the 'care' of NE£incs Council.”

“yes it did lift because when i was small in the late 60's I used to be terrified of crossing it in case it lifted when we were crossing.”

“Archers - you are quite correct. I believe that the council has a legal obligation to maintain the bridge in "lifting condition". I am not sure if that equates to "working condition" since the gates / barriers seem to be a thing of the past, but I do remember a great deal of money being spent on the electrics some years ago.”

“I remember when I was a child (early 70s) a number of occasions out shopping with my parents in their car, having to wait for corporation bridge opening”

“Yes it did
Road plates were being removed on one half of lifing side, when the weight of the road became less than the counterbalance weights---up she went, and a van parked on it slid back down just missing traffic waiting to cross.
Now when any work is done the lifting side is strapped to the stationary side.

“It was lifted when the Ross Tiger was moved to its berth, cannot remember when that was though.”
