I BELIEVE there has been a lot of talk on TV about Disability Living Allowance (DLA) and other benefits – about how unfair the changes are.

This is especially with regards to carers who have volunteered to give up work to look after a loved one.

Do you expect them to do it for nothing as it saves the NHS millions a year?

So let's get the DLA and DWP in perspective.

Someone applies for the help and fills in the forms and is awarded the amount they get.

They do not get this automatically as there is a lot of paperwork to complete.

One criteria is that you are only allowed a certain amount of savings.

But it is what the Government says you can have.

You just don't get it without the necessary paperwork so this is not a free-for-all benefit.

We know there are unscrupulous people who will tell untruths to the respective departments.

These are the people who want stopping. The genuine people who apply just want to live.

“clivegsd - why are you having a go at my 'groan' comment (I typed it, I didn't say it, so using speech marks isn't appropriate)? I was groaning at the letter writer's turgid style of writing a letter.

So before being a smart ****, conduct your brain before you try having a go at me.”

“If only it was as easy as just filling in a form. Along with the form you have to send supporting evidence of what you write in the form e.g. a letter from your GP, reports from any Consultants you see at hospital, and any other medical evidence you can provide. If you have a Social Worker or Care Worker, they can also provide written evidence. The DWP also have a Dr. they send you to see, who interrogates you.

All of the above before the DWP decide if you get Disability Living Allowance and/or Employment Support Allowance. Just because you had the audacity to become sick/disabled.

And in case some don't know, you can claim DLA if you work full-time or if you are a millionaire, just like our PM did for his late son Ivan.”
