DOES this Laceby man hold the key to curing potentially fatal canine conditions?

According to research, he may well do, after saving the life of one of his own dogs by creating a special food for it which can now be found on the shelves of many independent retail outlets across the UK.

Peter Speed was horrified to find that a liver condition affecting two of his 'best friends' was linked to eating protein-rich traditional foods.

After receiving the diagnosis from a vet, he carried out extensive market research and was unable to find a food that would save his pets – prompting him to launch his own recipes, with the help of food technologists.

Putting in substantial investment, and ensuring human food quality ingredients were used whenever possible, The Canine Cook range was formed, and he is now concentrating on the marketing of the brand as part of his 1st Class Pet Food company, with treats and further recipes to follow.

His labrador Brandy is now living a happy and healthy life.

Read more about the food and the problem itself in today's Grimsby Telegraph.

“This dog food can be bought on the internet or from Brigg Garden Centre. As far as what comes out of the back of dogs then The Canine Cook food is very highly digestible meaning the dog gets absorbs more goodness from it and this means less waste at the rear end. Hope this satisfies KT a little!”

“As a child growing up in the 'olden days', I remember having both cats and a dog. But as I recall, there were none of the processed pet foods which are readily available in the supermarkets today. They were fed scraps from the table and given the occasional bones from the oxtail soup or sunday joint.
(Neither was there money for vets, jabs, cat beds and 'carriers', scratching posts or cat-nip mice and treats)

All but one lived to ripe old ages.

These days, we still own a cat (or perhaps I should say, she owns us!) and as much as we love her, I can't help but find it obscene that - with half the worlds children dying of hunger - Asda offers me two whole aisles of cat foods to choose from.

So, although I wish Mr Speed every success with his business, I have to conclude that a front-page story on pet-food, and this ongoing discussion, is pretty irrelevant in the wider scheme of things.

(Though I'd also like to know where I can buy it from.. (grin))”
