'Don't let Scartho Baths go until we have a new 50-metre pool'

SCARTHO Baths must not be demolished until plans for a regional centre of excellence – complete with a 50-metre pool – are in place.

That is the view of regular swimmer and semi-retired fish merchant Richard Macklam, from Laceby, who is asking North East Lincolnshire Council (NELC) to reconsider closing the baths until wider consultation has taken place.

As reported, the pool is set to close in about two years' time and a new one built as part of a £7.5 million project at Grimsby Leisure Centre, featuring a 25-metre pool and a new gym.

However, Mr Macklam says a 25-metre pool is insufficient and a 50-metre competition-sized pool must be provided to allow the region's swimming talent to train to compete on a national stage.

He says NELC must work with national bodies such as Sport England, the National Lottery and the Amateur Swimming Association to garner extra support and funding for the larger pool.

He added: "There is no doubt that there are youngsters in this area who could be the next Rebecca Adlington. But without the right facilities they will have to travel miles to train and will not reach the top of their game.

"We need a 50-metre swimming pool in this area and Scartho Baths must not be demolished until further plans are in place to build one. Scartho is in a great location, right in the centre of town with plenty of land surrounding it, and I am positive the majority of people would rather it was upgraded than demolished.

"Surely a 37-metre pool is better than one that is only 25 metres?"

Mr Macklam, who swims at Scartho five times a week, says the council needs to take a step back from the existing proposals and consider the views of local people.

He added: "It seems to me that the council is trying to rail-road through this scheme with little understanding of what residents want.

"They need to understand not only what is desired, but also what is required to deliver a centre that would be a major asset to the area. In the interim period, the foremost consideration should be working around the existing Scartho facility so as to allow the continued excellent service it currently delivers to the local community.

"Given the chance these can be exciting times, not only for swimming but for the area as a whole."

As reported, Grimsby MP Austin Mitchell has already said it would be "wrong and unfair" to even consider closing Scartho Baths until a facility of the same size or bigger is available.

“s_pike it is not my view of where I grew up being a posh area of Cleethorpes but what people have said to me and when they have said it to me I have laughed at them and said that is how much you know about Cleethorpes so before commenting and twisting people's words to suit your argument read properly what has been said.

I actually do feel safer around Nunsthorpe than the Willows so has nothing to do with where I grew up but am saying that most people feel safer in the area that the present swimming baths are rather than where Grimsby leisure centre is and where the new unwanted pool is going to be.

Not many people are put off visiting people in the Hospital where it is and never have been. The point here is that they are going to make the swimming pool inaccessible to those without cars and therefore the cost to the area will be more due to obesity and a bigger strain on the already stretched health service. I actually go to Scartho baths on a regular basis but will not be going to where it is proposed to be moving to as I actually do not feel safe in that area at all let alone stand there waiting for public transport to get home and having to add a lot more time for travelling to and from the proposed swimming pool.

Then surprise surprise in the ET there is a comment about NELC overspending over the financial year but £1.6 million and that they are cutting help with CT. Hmmm think the NELC are a load of idiots that do not listen to the people that vote them in and have the attitude I am alright Jack and sod the rest of you and believe that s_pike maybe employed by the shambolic council that we have in this area, oh don't forget they are on about renaming the local authority and wasting even more money on obsolete stationbary with the present name on that will not be able to be used.”

“I still can't get over how a council could come to a decision like this, I would be really interested to know how many of them use any of the facilities, I have not met one person yet who thinks this is a good idea. I think alternative motives are behind this, if any of them used the facilities then they would have seen the folly. I still think this will be pushed through anyway, the only thing people can do is complain. I use all 3 facilities for different things, I can honestly say closing scartho pool just seems rediculous to me, especially from the point of access to most of the population, it just doesn't make sense.”

“Animal_owner's point is valid inasmuch as Cromwell Road is very poorly served by buses. I would disagree with Animal_owner in that I feel safe as houses walking around that area, as I do in the majority of the town - but Cromwell Road is fairly inaccessible to most people who don't have a car, unless you're willing to change buses two or three times. (Ah, the expense; the waiting for connections.)”

    “How snobbish animal_owner

"and the area of the proposed new swimming pool people do not feel safe going to unlike where Scartho baths is as most people feel safe in this area but hey ho what do the Council care about resident safety"

A_O is your view formed because, as you claim elsewhere, that you grew up in is the posh part of Cleethorpes? Where could that be in Cleethorpes because I've not noticed any posh parts?

Well I wonder whether some people are put off visiting elderly patients in the DPoW Hospital because of the closeness of the Nunny ;-)

I know, let's move the hospital close to the posh parts of Cleethorpes.”

“We are basically going to lose Scartho Baths because all those years ago when the leisure centre on Cromwell Road was built they only provided a pathetic thing for a pool which anyone that likes to swim has never been able to use. The pool at Cleethorpes Leisure centre was not built to competition size as we had Scartho baths so there was not the need or so Cleethorpes Council said at the time. Grimsby Council have always had a poor reputation for managing finances hence why Cleethorpes Council ended up with Immingham on its portfolio and other villages. From the looks of it North East Lincolnshire Council is run by the same short sighted people that used to run Grimsby Council or their decendents. Leave Scartho baths as it is in a central location and used by schools to take pupils to so that they can learn to swim and is much needed in the area. A lot of the time doctors recommend that people with arthritis or other mobility issues go swimming to help maintain a healthy weight as with these conditions the water supports the joints and therefore is less painful for these people than general exercise at a gym, so those with mobility problems will then lose the use of a suitable pool to exercise in as where the new pool is proposed is inaccessible for most people to get to as they do not drive and it is difficult to get on and off buses. Also Scartho Baths is even only one bus journey from most places in the area, yes people in Cleethorpes can catch one bus to get there and even people in Laceby are able to with just a short walk from the college to the swimming baths. I have come to the conclusion that North East Lincolnshire Council do not take into account that public amenities should be accessible to all in the area rather than just a few that have transport because believe it or not every household does not own a car as they can not afford to run one and the area of the proposed new swimming pool people do not feel safe going to unlike where Scartho baths is as most people feel safe in this area but hey ho what do the Council care about resident safety they would rather spend money on what the electorate do not want rather than listen to what the residents of North East Lincolnshire are saying they would rather have and which would save the council over £5 million if the figures that are being banded about are correct. Think the Councillors should take pay cuts so that they are on equal pay to the majority of people in this area rather than getting a wage then expenses on top of that it would definately cover the short fall they are moaning about all the time.”

“Grimbarian: "I don't understand why the likes of hmm_mmm and b_racuda keeping making comments about being in a time of austerity."

The phrase 'vested interests' comes to mind, Grimbarian. To my ears, the reappropriation of official rhetoric, and the linking of the two current news stories, sounds suspiciously like a party line is being toed. It wouldn't be the first time the letters page or the comments on the website have been used surreptitiously to reinforce the official rhetoric by local councillors.

Either that, or there's sour grapes over the cuts to the council tax benefits system. Well, I'm sorry, but on that issue I'd have to say 'suck it up'. I've scraped and struggled to pay council tax for years, with nary so much as a concession or any help whatsoever. Apparently, because I work and am on a low income, I'm unworthy of any help or sympathy. And having stated my position as someone who over the years has sunk thousands of pounds into paying my council tax, I'd rather my money go into refurbishing Scartho Baths, to be honest. Probably not a popular position to hold, but what the heck?”
