THE police have said that excessive force should not be used to apprehend criminals.

The law states that reasonable force can be used in self-defence, or in the apprehension of someone committing a crime.

A Humberside Police spokesperson said: "In an instance such as this, it is acceptable to use an appropriate level of force to protect either yourself or your business.

"However, it is important that in doing so, members of the public don't resort to using excessive measures."

If you need help, contact police on 0845 6060 222.
