COACHING stalwart Dave Raworth felt Drew Morgan's hard work was rewarded after the 18-year-old brought an amateur title back to Grimsby Amateur Boxing Club.

Morgan conquered Grimsby Boxing Academy's Dan Machin, on a unanimous points decision, to lift the Amateur Boxing Association Notts & Lincs Challenge light- welterweight belt at the Beachcomber, Humberston.

Going into the bout with a record of 20 wins and 15 defeats, Morgan used his experience to good effect as he rumbled 20-year-old East Midlands novice title winner Machin, who had previously fought 19 bouts.

He shared the glory with another Grimsby man on the night, as GBA's Dan Wellings won the lightweight honour on his club's home show.

"I was delighted to win the belt, not only for myself but also for the club," said Morgan.

"It was great to do it for the gym and all the coaches who have helped me.

"It was also good for the town of Grimsby to have two title winners."

Raworth, Grimsby ABC's head coach, added: "The Notts & Lincs Challenge belts are new this season.

"Any senior boxer over 17 years old can challenge for a belt over a fight of three, three-minute rounds

"It's been two or three seasons since the club has had some form of champion at the gym.

"Drew is a good role model. Over the years he has put in a lot of hard work at the gym and deserved a shot at the belt.

"Drew's success will build morale in the club and give the younger boxers something to aim for."

Raworth also feels the development of 22-year-old rising star Nathan French has assisted Morgan's progression.

"Drew was hoping to enter this year's senior ABA Championships but, with us having Nathan boxing at the same weight, we decided to let Drew challenge for the Notts & Lincs belt and Nathan enter the championships," added Raworth. "Both boxers train well together in the gym."
