Drivers stump up cash for taxi survey

TAXI drivers have stumped up £7,000 for a survey to assess the need for cabs – after calling for a cap on the number of drivers in the borough.

As reported, taxi drivers protested against North East Lincolnshire Council's policy of issuing unrestricted of taxi licences earlier this year, saying there were not enough ranks to cater for the increasing number of hackney carriages on the roads.

Last May – under increasing pressure from drivers – the council agreed to a temporary suspension on the number of licenses being issued.

However, in accordance with Government advice, to keep the cap in place legally, NELC announced it would need a borough-wide survey questioning whether demand for taxis in the area is being met.

Due to budget restrictions in light of the recent economic downturn, the council demanded a deposit from the Hackney Carriage Association to cover half of the £15,000 cost of the survey – a sum which will be reimbursed and recovered next year by raising cab licence fees by £55 to £195.

David Atkin, chairman of the Hackney Carriage Association, believes the majority of cab drivers in area were willing to pay towards the survey.

He said: "We conducted a survey back in May and April. We asked 111 drivers if they'd be prepared to contribute to the unmet demand survey.

"Out of them, 110 said they would, but not as many were willing to have the costs added to their licence fee."

But not every driver agrees with the new plans.

Grimsby cab driver, Nagim Obrian, 35, said: "It's bureaucratic bullying. The council didn't regulate the number of cabs on the road in the first place and we can't earn money because of their gross incompetence.

"How can they expect us to pay for this when it's their responsibility to maintain the hackney carriage service."

“the role of the council is to maintain the hackney carriage fleet for the public,if they dont know how many cars are needed, how can they do their job.did the stagecoach employees pay to find out how many buses are needed, its a public service, across the water in hull, the council pay,and always have, theyve never had an open policey.its counter productive.hull council are responsible and get the things they dont understand done by experts within the field, who know what they are doing, not laymen.going by hulls figures it works out 123 hackney, not nearly 250.the figures dont add up.the council only had to look at hull, which have 170 hackney,im no rocket scientist but i dont think we need more than a city.i earnt 36.60 saturday before last 10.45am to 6.30pm.if i could get permission id be willing to take rob out into the real world with real people, everyones different mate”

“Also there is a tariff 3, now that is one you will complain about.

Rob is sat here moaning on about real jobs, not sure if grimsby do this yet but most places now taxi drivers have to do a test and an NVQ is becoming essential, do you have an NVQ rob are you trained in dealing with people that have disabilities, most of these people are!!!

Some people seriously want to think about what they say before they do it.

Another thing is yes some do adjust their books but you cant do it by to much as remember a car clocks mileage does it not, many hackney meters do print outs, so if the HM Revenue wanted to check this they could!!!!

Oh and yes the bus lanes do have time limits on them, if only you could read the signs you would see this.”

“befor i pass comment i will declare an interest, i am a hackney driver. this situation on taxi numbers has arisen as a direct consequence of council policy over the last four years or so. the monies collected for the survey has come from existing funds of the H.C.A.and a contribution from a number of drivers who are concerned about their future. we niether expected or demanded the money from public funding.as for the earning potential of taxi drivers at the moment like most other people we are feeling the sqeeze. we have forgone our yearly increase this year as it would be imprudent to have one.yes the ranks are overcrowded and the more responsible among us do hear horror stories of over charging. if you feel you are a victim of this please report it to the hackney office ..note the white plate number at the rear of the vehicle and phone ..01472 324040.tarrif 1 operative between 0600-2300 tarrif 2 after 11pm tarrif 2 is equal to t1 plus1/3 app.as someone mentioned earlier most phones have a camera photograph the meter iuf your being ripped off... hope this helps”

    “anon,

Unless there are more than one "anons" on this forum, I think you have been told before, that the bus lanes ends at 09-30am (I believe) and CAN be used by taxi's, after that anyone can use them.
    Look at the signs.”

    “marko,

Do you mean "being?" and not "been."

Also, T2 normally starts at 11-00pm. Look at the meter on getting into the car. So, if you're BEING charged T2 at any time up to 11-00pm ask the driver why? and then say you'll have a word with his/her office.

BTW, the 'caps lock' key is to the left of the A key. :-)”
